Countertop ice maker
Looking for countertop ice maker with manual fill reservoir.
anybody have one that’s not junk? |
My wife and I sprung for the GE Opal for ourselves for our anniversary and it’s awesome. If I have one complaint it’s that it has a constant mechanical whir when it’s making ice. It’s not as loud as a microwave or anything but if you’re in the room you can hear it. That said, if we let it make ice overnight while we sleep the bucket will get us through the day with no issue so we can turn it off during the day while we’re in the kitchen.

We got one for use when we're on the road in the motor home because the normal one in the refrigerator doesn't make as much ice as we use. It made good ice and a good bit of it. What isn't cool is that if you aren't using it all the time, you'll be needing to clean out the crap that grows in it when it isn't freezing. Not hard to clean, but it's a 2-beer job to do it right.
We now just get a bag of ice and don't use the ice-maker. If you want one cheap, PM me. |
I have had one for about 10 years and it works great.
I did have to repair a plastic part by wiring it back together. (don't remember much about it) The trick to getting more ice is there is a round chrome pin that the ice cools down to shut it off when the ice gets that high in the bin. If you just hold that pin to warm it up with your fingers the machine will turn back on faster making more ice. |
I got an Air Choice from Amazon for our Travel Trailer. Used it every day on a two month trip this summer. I would turn it on a couple of hours before cocktail time and turn it off when I went to bed. Always had plenty of ice. Cleaning has not been a big problem as we empty the water out when we travel. It also does not maintain ice, but makes it so quickly it doesn't matter. We like it so much, we transferred it to the bar at our condo.

Couple points, they have a limited lifespan from what I have experienced along with a good number of friends, I can say nobody has them anymore.... The other down side is the ice is not really a dense type ice cube, it will melt fast, but if that's all acceptable then it will make a good amount of "ice" and you will be happy for some time.

I bought one online for my fifth wheel trailer for under $100. It's been working great for 5 years+. Wouldn't want to have to fill it up with water every couple of days manually in my home, but it's great in a travel trailer or boat w/110 volts.

I bought this one on Amazon and have had it probably 4 years. It uses 5 gallon water bottles. I fill the water jug with well water to make fishing ice, use a new water bottle for house ice. It's not super fast to make ice but you have choices of 3 different sizes of ice and it's still working just fine. I was afraid it was going to be a piece of junk but I'm really glad I bought it.

When I need more ice than the ice maker bin in the fridge will hold (in my side-by-side fridge), I take the ice bin out and put a trash can that fits under it, I removed the top shelf in the freezer, the trash can it only used for ice. I take a few days, but will fill the can and is 3 bags worth of ice.

On a side note, I was reading reviews on Samsung kitchen appliances and all of the owners were totally dissatisfied. . |
Has a 5 year old Samsung when I moved in with wife/girlfriend, started freezing up, no one would fix it, could not give it a away, had to take it to the dump.
