Material on a YKK VISLON zipper (the actual fabric, not the plastic zipper.)

I'm trying to get my hands on a the material that the YKK #10 VISLON zippers are molded into. When you buy the zipper, you have a piece of fabric on each side, and then the zipper on the edge... does anyone know the proper name for that material? I need to sew about 1/2" "wider" band and I'd like to use the same material.

Sorry if this is a bit cryptic, but anyone's who has ever sewn a zipper knows the material I'm talking about...

You can see the material here:

https://www.sailrite.com/YKK-Zipper-...ckup=undefined

Thanks,
Pete

Why use the same material? There are many options that would last better in the sun.

I'm open to suggestions... it only needs to be about 1" or 2" wide... suggestions? Prefer it on a roll... Thanks!

Looks like narrow woven polyester... YKK calls it tape but it isn't tape, thats just a marketing name.

https://www.ykkfastening.com/product.../s_zipper.html

I would guess it is woven polyester or nylon made in very narrow strips on loom. You can make all kinds of narrow woven patterns and colors to sew the zipper on to.

Go to a craft store like Micheal's or Hobby Lobby.. they will have small spools.

Stamoid or Sunbrella would be the best choice if it’s going to be in the sun. A canvas shop would be the best place to find a couple of small strips. 3/4” binding of either would do it.

Stamoid is vinyl coated wide woven fabric and Sunbrella is a wide woven acrylic fabric and both would have to be slit into strips... then it would lose its ability to stay together.

Trust what YKK uses, they have been making zippers for ever and have the market cornered.

They use NF fabrics which just means they are woven on small narrow looms, like one inch wide, kind of like braiding. The edges are locked on (called a selvage) and will not unravel like a wide woven that you cut into strips.

A canvas or upholstery shop is his best bet for zipper chain fabric... unless he needs a lot of it.

Zipper chains.. google even has it

Are you talking about binding tape? Binding tape is used to finish raw edges of fabric and is often used to finish the edges of canvas where a zipper is then sewn on.

You can get binding tape a a variety of widths. It is a lot easier to use with a binding tape fitting for your sewing machine.

That looks like what he needs

How about nylon webbing? Itís a little heavier but comes in 1Ē wide rolls.

Classic25 08-23-2020 06:28 AM

Pete, it’s polyester. Glen Raven is making zippers with acrylic now (Sunbrella)

I didn't know that! Interesting. I know YKK is tried and true, but I also know they fail... so I'd be interested in the Raven ones! I love Sunbrella...

Maybe I can pick your brain.

Here's the situation... I'm redoing the zippers on my enclosure. (broken teeth and stitch failure). So far I am VERY proud of the ones I've done - they've held up well (Tenara thread, etc. #10 YKK). I've gotten the hang of sewing with Tenara (tension setting on bobbin, etc.)... So now I have another section to repair that requires something a little different.

I have a section of enclosure that is about 3/8" too narrow (too short) (it's a long brow above the windscreen) -- it's about 8' long and about 7" tall. What I need to do is add about 3/8" of material to the width of the zipper (so, it becomes 7-3/8" tall). I'll post a sloppy drawing after I post this reply.

And, no, it's not just a matter of setting my basting tape 50% of 3/8" on each side. There's just not enough meat... so I need to zigzag stitch a "filler" (if you will)...

If you have an idea for a good material, I'm all ears. :)

Thanks!

"A" is the strip that I'm adding...

What about a zipper extender?

Neat item... but it'll be too much (the panel will be too loose)...
