Default Laid Off Today

Owner calls me this morning and says my position has been eliminated. He says I can quit now, or stay on for another month and help with the transition.

The rest of our Accounting team was let go recently. Iím the go-to guy so I guess thatís why I lasted so long.

Iím going to stay on and help them, but it just goes to show you that you can be loyal (been here five years,) you can go to the office last minute on weekends to help with something, as well as cater to every demand - and do it well - and still get let go.

I've always wondered why I work nights and weekends at a moments notice for a company who would have me replaced by Monday if I was hit by a bus on Friday.

Yeah man. Iíve been doing 12 hour days with the COVID transition, catering to every management request, and for what? To get tossed out on the street?

I need a hug.

Time to put out your own "shingle"!
Take as many client's contact info as you can before you leave.

I donít really deal with any customers besides Accounts Receivable type stuff. Besides, taking something like that would be unethical and probably even illegal.

Iíve actually heard of sales people stealing info like that and trying to start their own company with it. Usually doesnít end well for them.

I honestly canít see how someone with zero Accounting experience is going to be able to do that. There are thousands of transactions a month across several entities. Itís impossible.

I donít burn bridges. If I leave now then theyíll just blame me for everything. If I have everything running smoothly and well-documented when I go, then they will only have themselves to blame for ****ing it all up.

I understand wanting to get paid an extra month while you try to line up something new. I was offered a similar deal once and I stayed. I really could have F'd them over by leaving though and I've always regretted staying. F them.

I think double pay for the "transition month" would be fair.........for you!

Are you getting any kind of severance benefits?

Hang in there. Your boss may be delaying your release in case he changes his mind. It has happened to me before and I was retained.

Look at it this way, you get paid for a month to look for your next employer. Working hard to ensure a seamless departure or looking hard for a new job....I know what my priority would be.

Is he laying you off because he absolutely has to? If so you can’t be horribly upset. If his business can’t afford to pay you then he really has no control over it. This Covid thing has killed a lot of businesses.

I know it doesn’t make losing your job any easier but in my opinion I wouldn’t fight with my money if I was you and I would stay on until you find a new job so his decision Hopefully doesn’t cost you any $$.

best of luck!

I've catered to my boss for over 20 years and all I get is thankless criticism and threats to terminate my employment. I wish my wife would make up her mind.

This x 1000. Use that month to maintain an income but your priority now is to find your next role.

I wouldn't "quit" now if I were you. Doing so might impact your ability to receive unemployment.

I'm also curious if he is going down due to Covid or is he a big spender? If Covid, I understand as even I have slowed down to the point I was getting very nervous but this last couple weeks have started showing hope. I think that is noble of you and it is the right thing to help him and use the month to try to find a good place to fit in. Also the next month could turn him around or sink him as well as other jobs you might get if you jump ship right now due to Covid and, well it's 2020 and I'm confident something else major will hit us before November I am a believer in Karma and that will score you some points. The thing with Karma, my good Karma sometimes takes a long time to pay but my bad Karma usually hammers me quickly

Also, that would look good on a resume...
