Default Small World Stories

Post your Small World Stories here. I'll start:

1. I hired a lab assistant once, named Sue. Worked together for 3 years, and one day over lunch, we figured-out by accident that we were related - her grandmother's sister had married my grandmother's brother back around 1940, in NJ. Sue and I were both in our 40's, and living in Florida when we figured this out.

2. I had a very close friend, Fred, that I met when I first moved to Florida in 1982. He moved away to New Orleans. I went to visit him during Mardi Gras, which happened to be close to Superbowl time, and it was in New Orleans that year (2002). TV was on, and ESPN talking to old NFL all-star Chuck Bednarik. Fred exclaims that he knows Chuck's nephew, Wade Bednarik. I looked shocked and asked Fred to repeat himself. He said he lived next door to Wade Bednarik in NJ when he was a kid in the 60's. Well, Wade Bednarik is my own brother-in-law! He married my sister, and they are still married.

3. I took a road trip up north to visit family and friends. I stopped in Wilmington, DE to see a concert (The Radiators, perhaps). Met a guy during the show and we started talking. He said that he lived in Morrisville, PA. I told him that I was actually going to Morrisville after the show to stay with my friend. Told him I knew several people in that town. He says that he just moved there a week ago, and he only knew on person, Maggie Bruno. Damn! Maggie was the friend I was staying with! Saw him the next day at Maggie's softball game.

4. My friend, and fishing buddy, and I, were both post-docs at UF. We got to talking one day about a chemistry convention in Memphis 5 years before. Turns out we were both there, but he went to Clemson at the time. I started telling a story about picking the lock on the fire stairs in high-rise hotel to burn a joint with some guy up on the roof at midnight. Suddenly we both realized that it was the two of us who burned that joint!

5. My college room-mate now lives in Pompano, and one of his best friends there is a kid I was friends with in middle school in PA. We just got a new waitress at my local Waffle House. She says she is from Pompano. I say I have a friend there - she asks if I know Mark L. Well, that is him (my college room-mate).

I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of now.

The world turns every day. As it does, it gets smaller and smaller.

We trailered our boat down to Marathon about a month ago (From the Savannah area, only the second time ever). While we were down there, we got a text from a buddy back home with a picture of us on our boat - really odd. The weather was rough one day, so we decided to ride the canals in Key Colony Beach. At the exact time that we were riding down one canal, one of his buddies posted a video of him being in the keys, which just happened to catch us at the perfect moment riding by.

Probably more of a crazy coincidence that everything lined up perfectly.

I did a short two week visit to the old Soviet Union during a study abroad in London in 1985. One of the other American girls in my group wants me to go to the post office with her because I had been taking Russian for a semester or two. So we are standing in line in a post office in Moscow, which looks like you think it does, thousands of people, massive lines. After a few minutes , the girl goes, "I went to elementary school with that girl over there" , and points to a girl in another line fifty feet away. I said, do you remember where we are standing? She says, watch!, She hollers the girl's name, the other girl turns, screams OMG and runs over. She was on a similar trip from her college as we were. They had not seen each other since like the third grade, then in a post office in Moscow.

Have been a huge fan/admirer of George Foreman since I was a little boy - I'm 55 now to lend perspective. Last year a girl I grew up with posts a pic on FB of George and her husband enjoying some "pepsis" on their back porch in east Texas - I immediately call her with WTF is George Foreman doing on your back porch "oh he and Randy (her hubby) are big pals, George comes over to go hunting all the time."

About 15 years ago, I was at my wife's grandmothers wake. While sitting there, HER cousin (Kevin) walks in with MY second cousin (Julie). Huh? Turns out they were dating... and eventually got married. Very strange. As Kevin says, "Not too many good stories start out, 'so I was walking into my grandmothers funeral..."

Couple of years later, they are at a wedding in Maui (Julies sister, obviously also my 2nd cousin). Kevin starts talking to one of the servers, and the kid asks Kevin where they are from. When he replied NJ, the kid said his ex-girlfriend had family in NJ and he was there once... turns out his ex-girlfriend is my niece (my sisters daughter)

Was standing Quarterdeck Watch in the navy, in Kings Bay, Ga. I was one of two watch standers.

I was born and raised in Mississippi.

The watch is four hours long (12am to 4am) and boring... so you can imagine some of the conversations that come up. So I am chatting with this guy for an hour or so and we start asking "where are you from". He says Colombia, Ms. which is my birth place. I ask him if he knows my cousin (i give him his name). The guy about pisses his pants laughing and says "so you are the crazy SOB he keeps telling me all these crazy stories about".

Yep... that was me.

OP here again. I dated a girl named Laurie in high school. Stayed friends with her after, and would occasionally see her when I visited my home town. She came to my house and my mother had old photo albums out. Newspaper clipping from when Laurie and I were both 4. Photo of 2 little kids on sidewalk with Adult dressed like Easter Bunny. LOL! Me and Lori! Both of us knew we had that old photo, but neither of us ever looked at the names in the caption.

Last summer, I visited Alaska. Ended-up in Seward. Ran into a good friend of mine from Florida. He was stranded there due to ferryboat strike. He was camped 200 yards from my hotel.

Was living in Lake Tahoe after college for a few years. One morning I put 10 bucks into my truck to get us to Kirkwood. Had to go inside the gas station to pay. I gave the 10 to the attendant, turned, heading to the door, when I heard my name mentioned. Stopped in my tracks, turned around and the attendant turned out to be a kid who lived down the street from me in HS on Cape Cod, he and I used to hang out until my Junior year in HS. We had no idea the other was out there...

Jump in a hot tub at a resort in Cancun. The people already sitting there say there are from South Dakota. I tell them I only know one guy from SD. Turns out he is their neighbor and was supposed to go on the trip.

Was at a business conference in Naples, FL. Walked up to a table at a cocktail reception. Make small talk about where we are from. Turns out the person I start talking to is a second cousin. Never met her. Grew up seeing pictures of her on my grandmother's refrigerator.

My wife and I took an Uber home one night after a date night and got to talking with the Uber driver. Turns out he just got stationed in Charleston and was previously stationed in Kings Bay, GA on a boomer (for you non-Navy people, giant submarine with big missiles). I tell him my best friend whom I had served with in VA Beach was stationed in Kings Bay but has since moved on to Everette WA. Turns out my buddy was this guy's CPO while onboard the sub. I called my buddy in WA while still in the Uber and turns out he was also driving an Uber in WA to pass the time. His wife and kids weren't able to accompany him to the West Coast so he had a lot of free time..

Another strange run in was while I was drinking in a hotel bar after a Tool concert in downtown Jacksonville. I was talking to a few guys at the bar and one of them was next door neighbors with my parents on James Island. Small world.

My wife and I were walking through Stono Market on Johns Island and from the other side of the room we hear my wife's name. A girl my wife grew up with in Ohio had just moved to Charleston and was working in the market. That one isn't too surprising, everyone from Ohio eventually makes their way to Charleston one way or another.

Oooh. you just mentioned Charleston and it reminded me... I down there for my college buddy's wedding. Went a couple of days early and went to play golf. Ended up playing with a guy who lived about 500 feet away from me in New Jersey in the same apartment complex. Only saw the guy once after that.

Durban, South Africa, late 1940's, my mother remembers playing with the girl next door. My Grandmother was best friends with her Mom. Soon after they moved away and lost contact. Before she died, my Grandmother gave my Mom her shortbread recipe and swore her to secrecy.

Fast forward 70 years and 7,000 miles. My Mom makes her famous shortbread for a function at the local museum. The table is covered in cakes and cookies made by little old ladies. She sees a plate of shortbread that looks exactly like hers, takes one - tastes exactly like hers. See where I'm going with this?

Seems Grandma divulged the recipe to her friend after one too many Sherry's. Now my Mom and her are friends again.
