The NC natives (which we are not) pronounce it "Bow-furt." ("Bow" as in a tied shoelace)

Bow-fort for NC. Pronounce it Bee-ew-furt like the city in SC and people will know you're a yankee. Then they'll shake their head and say, "Bless your heart."

We would all understand if we just spelled it "Bo". English language can be confusing.

for all you unwashed ingrates and malcontents, the word is French. it means surrender . All French words translate to I surrender or we give up. Beau is the root woord and in French it's pronounced with an upright attitude as bow . Beautiful is a derivative of the word . I had two years of French in high school and a year in college so that pretty much makes me a linguistics expert.

when I was Beaufort , SC I would hear the indigenous people prounounce it as bew-firt. when I as in Beaufort, NC I would hear their indigenous people prounounce it Beaufort or bow-fort. I would say the NC tribe is a bit more snooty than the SC tribe in this regards. I often wonder what Black Beard called each town? well, one was like his home town , so he problably just called it home. lol

If one lives between Savannah, GA and Littke River, SC the pronunciation is Byoo furt.
if one lives between Sunset Beach,NC and Knotts Island, NC the pronunciation is Bo furt.

If one lives north of Virginia, west of Georgia or south of West Palm, Beach then we dont care.

Otherwise, you get a pass.

The folks at the SC visitors center told me years ago that it's "Beautiful Beaufort", SC.

Beaufort, SC: BEW-fərt

Beaufort, NC: BOH-fərt

?????????????????????????????????????

“Beaufort—pronounced “boe,” not “bue” (except in South Carolina)—is a French name that means “handsome” or “great” or “strong,” as in a fortress. The name originated in Europe in the 900’s, when a strong man built his fortress to protect local interests from the Vikings who had landed on the continent and were plundering France. In any case, France has 13 Beauforts, and several others exist around the world.
