Default Can I write off travel for a free seminar?

I am trying to justify a little ski trip to my wife and accountant (different people) I am a SAMS surveyor and fully ABYC accredited. I was thinking that one of the Denver Metro boat dealers might like E-11 explained as to how it pertains to rigging and repair for their tech's. Especially considering the new NMMA rules for 2007.
1) Can I deduct my travel and expenses if I actually do the speech?
2) Anybody know of a dealer that might be receptive?
3) Think my wife will buy it?
4) Do I need to charge a fee to make it legit?

Thanks, Doc.

I'd ask the accountant.

I believe what you plan could qualify as advertising for your business , the travel and lodging are the "cost" of the advertising even if you don't charge for the seminar, which is a business "promo".......

A little bit "gray." I'd avoid it. Unless you have a history of this type of activity it may look odd. Also you'd probably only be allowed the meals and lodging for each day that you had a presentation.

Good luck!

Collect business cards from people you talk to

And keep copies of any presentations you make

I'll disclaim that I am not an accountant but I have done some traveling related with our trade association over the last few years. The wife's tickets and expenses aren't deductible. Our association actually paid for my wife's travel and expenses but we were given a 1099 at the end of the year for her part. Not too bad considering we simply paid the tax on her travel and meals. If you aren't charging a "reasonable" fee I agree with evernic that you may be able to chalk it up to "advertising", or as I do a lot, "education" if you could prove to Uncle Sam that seminar benefited you in your profession. I'll also second Gus' comment about documenting the "work" you did while you were there.

Second disclaimer: Anything can be deducted until you are priviledged enough to prove it to one of them there revenueers.
