Default My kid is sick and I am freaking out

Never thought I'd be posting on here about something like this, but I am partly venting in an anonymous fashion, and partly asking for prayers. My 3 Y.O. had some nasty diarreah, with blood, and was pushing fevers of 103+. Finally got his doctor to listen to us and they diagnosed him with Salmonella. It is one nasty bacteria.

He is on his 9th day of fever and diarreah so today we took him to the ER for more tests. Tests come back ok so far, but he is still febrile, has diarreah (not as bad as before) and now is complaining of headaches and low back pain. Of course, I went to webmd and read just enough to make myself crazy thinking about the possible parade of horribles.

It is amazing how I start thinking of all the worse case scenarios, when I am generally one of the most positive upbeat people I know. I just can't fathom that anything could happen to this kid. Not because he is mine, but he really is one of the sweetest nicest kids you could imagine. Has never raised a hand to hit his little brother who bites, pushes, punches and pulls his hair. Just says, "don't hit." Took the IV in the hospital like a champ. Cried for all of three seconds and then said, "thank you" to the nurse when she was done. That's the type of kid he is and this is killing me.

So, if any of you all are any sort of religious (don't care which) I would appreciate your prayers. Funny, how I become religious everytime I face a huge adversity, huh?

I am sitting here on THT, just trying to keep my mind off the whole thing. So, thanks THT for being my therapist tonight. Also, a bit of advice, do NOT go to webmd to find out about illnesses. It's like reading the warning labels on medicines. It will send you into a panic.

OK, I vented. Thanks.

rkatz' That doesn't come across as a vent, but parental concern. Said a prayer for him (and you). Kids are tougher than we can imagine, so hang in there. You have a huge support group here on THT. Keep us posted, please.

I know the feeling - My kid had a very rough first 1/2 years - saw the best of the best specialists - just be there for him. Love is the best medicine

Please stop reading. You are 100 percent correct it will drive you crazy. Does the hospital have a pediatric unit ?
If it was my kid i would go to a hospital that specializes with children. Many prayers go out to you and your loved one. No one likes to see children in pain.

Prayers sent.

The internet is always the first place people go to to learn about an illness in their family, and always the worst, as it is never representative. What I mean is, the cases you see images of on the internet are always the worst 1%. My daughter has Neurofibromatosis, and has had it diagnosed since she was 1 yr old (she is now 6 1/2). When her pediatrician pointed out that she MIGHT have it, we went home and searched the net. Big Mistake. The images and cases documented online are nothing like the mild condition she has. We were ready to slit our wrists after we saw them though.

All the best to your family rkatz. If you are still concerned get him back to the doctor, and keep your kid hydrated at all costs.

Kids are made of tough stuff and recover quickly

We have always preferred to bring our kids and grand kids to a children's hospital as kids suffer from different sicknesses than adults and kids react differently to different drugs and stuff than do adults

The internet is generally extremist with many posts either being rants or someone pushing their products via scare tactics

PS Parental concern is OK

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Kids can be amazingly tough and strong when they need to be.

Sorry to hear about the illness, I know it's tough to go through something like this. Keep a positive attitude, hug him tight, and yes pray.. My prayers go out to you and your precious one.

I really appreciate all the thoughts. Yes, we took him to premier pediatric ER in the area and I got the best damned pediatric infectious disease specialist in the area working with us also. Thanks for all the advice.

On the bright side, the fever is down today to a comparatively mild 100.5, or so and he is actually eating a little bit.

Funny, don't really know anyone here personally, but feel like I've got a bunch of friends. Thanks again.

Wishing you, your wife, and the little feller the best. I’m guessing it is hardest on the adults. It is not easy for a bacterial infection to take a person all the way down. Not even for salmonella. I think you will be surprised when the little guy suddenly bounces back.

Please keep us posted on his recovery.....other problems sure do not seem as important when a child is sick! We'll pray for a full and quick recovery.
