Default Wash/Dryer...Dreaded this day!

After many, many years of good service our maytag washer bit the dust, motor is shot. Dryer on her lest legs as well so time to replace both.
Now....the 10,000 dollar question. Beside Speed Queen...can't afford! What did you, would you buy?

Want front load washer & dryer because I'm going to place a wooden countertop over them so that sorting & folding is easier for me.

Thanks.

CHEAPEST mechanical control units you can get. GE, Amana, etc. all brands are hit or miss. Stay away from electronics as best you can. FORGET the high end creep!

Our Maytag Sucks!! Washer wraps the clothes tight around the drum and clothes get damaged. Dryer is ok.

Speed Queen and Miele says Consumer reports...along with Whirlpool, Kenmore and Maytag.

When our LG dryer acted up I called their help line, put the cordless phone next to the phone symbol on the control pad an pressed a button....a series of fax tones told them we only had 110V not 220 V coming to the dryer. Sure enough, the split breaker had tripped on one side. The pair only cost around $1200 and has been great for the four years we have owned them.

Bingo. We bought front load, minimal electronic craigslist specials. Some dude ran a side business picking up curb alert washer and dryers and fixing them. One threw a belt after 7 years and something stupid simple broke on the other. Point being, Since they were so common, cheap parts and youtube videos fixed them for under $30

FWIW, today (8 July) is the last day of the July 4th sales at many of the big suppliers... I am about to pull the trigger on a new dryer.

Get a top loader Speed Queen. The clothes will be cleaner, and won't wear out as quickly and the washer/dryer will last forever

Finally got rid of the front loader last year. If you want you clothes to stink and to constantly have to clean out the mold, go for it! We're back to a top loader and couldn't be happier. We spent a fortune on beautiful red LG washer and dryer 6 years ago. THEY SUCKED. Back to basics now and my shirts don't stink any more.

^^^^ this is correct. I was in the OPs shoes last year. Aside from speed queen they are all garbage now. I honestly wish I had just replaced the motor in my 20 year old Maytag now. None of these new machines clean shit and they take forever to do it.

I’d fix the old machine or suck it up and buy speed queen.

I replaced a top loader with the biggest / highest energy efficient front loader I could get. Retailed for $1600 and internet purchased dropped at the curb for $1300 . My combined water and electric bill dropped $100 / month. Year in year out. Get the extended warranty.

In 2006 I bought the Frigidaire front loader washer and dryer for my wife. She was dead set on the front load even though I had my doubts. Surprisingly I have had very few problems and nothing that I could not fix myself. Now don't get me wrong, we did have a few problems.

First problem was with the washer when the door lock broke. Sometime around 2013. I ordered the part from the repair clinic and fixed it myself. Pretty simple repair.
Second problem was with the dryer when the bearing went out. 2014. Again I ordered the part along with a new belt and fixed it myself.
Third and final problem was about two years ago when the main control board died in the dryer. Ordered the part and fixed it myself. If I recall correctly that was around a $150 repair cost.

For the record I don't think Frigidaire makes front load washers any longer. Trying to tell us something??? Possibly!

I just bought a cheap ass mechanical Hotpoint washer and dryer. Installed the washing machine today actually. It’s made by GE but basic as can possibly be. We’ll see what happens.

Fancy Samsung dryer just crapped out. Bought a nice Whirlpool on sale at Lowes for $429. There are some solid deals right now.
