To start with, hotels in DC are terribly expensive. The best and closest hotel is probably the Willard $$$$$$$, the Marriott on 14 and Penn is good and right off the mall. On the other side of the mall is La Enfant plaza and there is a nice hotel there but I forget the name. There is a Holiday Inn right next door that is decent. If you have kids and don't mind being farther out there is a Wardman Park Marriatt that is walking distance to the zoo. Then there are a number of hotels on Capitol Hill by Union Station.

Also the best value right on the Mall is the Hotel Washington but the rooms aren't the greatest. These are the first ones to come to mind but there are many more of course.

I personally like the Hay Adams but I don't think they have a pool. The Mayflower is nice too but a fair walk from the mall. The Grand Hyatt isn't far from the mall and they do have a pool and exercise center. Just a thought.

You may want to look at a map of the METRO system and stay outside the city. You may be able to find better rates in the suburbs and the Metro is pretty convienent to evrything downtown

No shortage of luxury hotels in DC, what is short is affordable mid market hotels in decent locations.

I often stay in the Tysons Corner area of Virginia for business at a Marriott Courtyard for $240 a night and it's nothing special, then add parking, taxes etc.

If you get through Annapolis, give me a shout

Thanks ....

We are actually looking at Annapolis also; it would be my preference .

Trying to decide still what the rest of the family might enjoy more. If we did go to Annapolis, how far a drive is it to the DC "Mall area"?

It is a straight shot via route 50. The distance isn't the question it is how bad the traffic might be. I stayed there in a friends place for awhile. If I remember correctly it was normally around an hour. I like Annapolis. However, I too have 4 kids and if it was me and I was going to stay that far away, I would get the Hyatt Inner Harbor in Baltimore. If I was single or just with the wife only I might do Annapolis. The drive to DC from both would be similar. The inner harbor has more for the kidos. ....in my opinion.

I was my friends best man at his wedding. The wedding was at the hotel we stayed at. Expensive is not the word for it. I spent $325.00 for the room for 1 night. The little refriderator cost me $156.00 to refill it.

The JW Marriott near Georgetown is pretty nice, too. I haven't been there in years, but went to college at GW. The Grand Hyatt / Hyatt Grand ??? is a also quite a nice hotel. As far as staying in the burbs, Alexandria, VA is not far at all. Annapollis and Baltimore are a bit more of trek, not sure I would want to stay there. There is way too much to do in DC to spend time driving back and forth. Better off staying in Alexandria, VA or somewhere thereabout.

As far as things to do, you won't do any of them justice in a long weekend. You could spend a week in DC alone and not see it all. If it were me. I would look at the JW Marriott, best bet for price and location. Leave early the last day and go to Annapolis, then go home over the eastern shorn up to the Delaware Memorial Bridge, much more pleasant ride and you avoid Baltimore and Rt 95

The Ritz in Pentagon City is a nice place as well. A metro station is directly under the building.

I forgot about that one. We stay in the Ritz when we have meetings and I am starting to realllyyyyy reallllly like them. THat is a nice property too, attached to Pentagon City shopping mall.

A side suggestion. While in the area drive out to haynes point (sp?) and bring a camera. There is an art work there called "the awakening" the kids will love it and it is a great place to get some picks. It is a huge sculpture of a man arrising form the ground. I think it looks like he is drowning. Most people miss this but it is well worth seeing.
