Default Travel rant

I left South Central PA this morning on my way to Denver via. Chicago. I departed O'Hare at 8:20 and we were within 30 minutes...yep 30 min. of DIA and the Captain comes on the PA and says,

We've been advised by United Mgmt. to turn around and head back to Chicago. WTF ! Airport is open, put this plane down !

So we make a nice U turn , stop in Omaha for fuel and after 5 hous a nice RT to O'Hare.

United Mgmt. dosen't want the B777 wide body to become stuck at DIA. Anyone heard of such a thing ?

BTW, I'm typing from a hotel outside O'Hare.....possibly again tomorow night.

What's the weather supposed to be like in Denver? Is that why you think they turned around?

Yea, DIA closed at 3pm Mtn Time. Blizzard Conditions. Between the flight cancellations and the upcoming Holiday Crowds, I'll be lucky to get there even on Friday.

I simply can't believe they turned us around. Are there really so few 777's?

So I would assume the airlines is picking up the tab! Do they limit the amount of food and drink you can have?

BW23 ~ is this trip of yours to Denver business or "pleasure"....? Just wonderin'.

And yes, unfortunately, Denver is experiencing a blizzard right now. Seems that tends to happen this time of year around there....

So I'm sure that due to the way that the airport is positioned between mountain ranges and given the enormous size of a 777 - there are "issues" with wind shear, etc... Hang in there!

I'm all for STAYIN' AT HOME durin' the holidays.

That sucks to be so close and then denied. Guess you have to defer to the airlines decisions with regards to weather.

Based on reports from Denver and DIA, I'll likely be spending the day and another night in Chicago. I received a discount coupon for a room.

So any recommendations for something to do in Chicago ?

777's are used mainly on Int'l flights. Propobaly did not want to risk losing it in DIA if it was scheduled to go Internationally on another flight. They make alot of money on those International flights with a very efficient 777

Well you S.O.L on seeing the Bears play this weekend, they'll be in Detriot.

Here's a little travel secret tip of mine, when in a strange town/ city I'll ask taxi drivers what's worth doing, what's worth seeing and where the best places are to eat and who has the best entertainment - night clubs. I'll ask one or several cab drivers given the size of the town/ city. IMO these drivers know their town/ city better then probably anybody, I've NEVER been disappointed with any suggestion they've made!

Yup. They probably didnt want the aircraft to be "blockaded" by the weather. United cancelled a lt of Denver service yesterday. They may not have cancelled everything but everything I saw was cancelled (corporate travel). Flights for today were "zero'd out," meaning the airline stopped selling them to avoid futher service issues and/or to block space for re-accomodation.

I dont know how today was because I had the day off.

Well.......Ill be checking out of this hotel shortly and heading to O'Hare to stand in line with the masses. Depending what the ticket agent says, it might be easier for me to return to PA and bag the trip.

I've been researching the possibility of renting a car and driving the 1000 miles to Denver. Some agencies don't rent 1 way, others are $600-800 with the drop fee's. I've ruled that option out.

This sure has been a eye-opening experience.

Merry X-Mas.

Denver is expecting to have 2 runways open for this afternoon and the third sometime tonight. Everything I see CHI to DEN is sold-out or zero'd out. No flights are scheduled to leave DEN before 1pm local. If you are going to drive you can probably expect to pass through this storm at some point.

According to NOAH: Minneapolis seems to be next. Omaha is expecting rain but not snow. I sugggest a southerly routing if you need to drive.

London airports are fogged in, no arrival expected for 2-3 days so no planes are there to take you out.

Good luck!
