Default Gun Question

So own a 22 Rifle and a Shot Gun. This year seems to be pretty bad for snakes and I was wanting to shoot some. The Shot Gun is way to much for the neighborhood I live in and was wondering about using the 22 with some sort of shot gun like shell. What do you guy think or recommend? My dumb ass neighbor decided to trap raccoons and a few feral cats so I'm guessing thats the reason for so many snakes.

They make a .22 caliber snake shot. I’ve used it, but prefer to use subsonic ammo in my suppressed 10-22.

Shotshell ammo from CCI works great on Copperheads and moccasin, have not tried it in a semiauto though. I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t cycle the action.

Shot shells won’t cycle a .22 auto.

Also don’t shoot good snakes.

I have a bush axe that has dispatched many a venomous snake.
The only unknown is how many pieces.

Auto is of course correct here on an automatic 22. A single shot would be fine, however the rifling would open that scatter shot pretty quick.
Henry makes a smooth bore lever action that will do the trick. The Henry "Garden Gun"

I've never had much luck with 22lr snake shot. Emptied a 22 revolver on a big old Copperhead from about 10-12 ft away...all it did was irritate it. I was thinking I must be terrible shot but after shooting at piece of notebook paper, only a few pellets even hit it. Water hose pattern would be putting it mildly. I think I would opt for sub-sonics or bush axe, shovel, etc.

But seriously, try to give the snakes a pass..even the venomous ones.

easy to confuse copper heads with banded water snakes. Don’t kill banded water snakes. They are nice.

I've been looking at pictures of both so not to confuse the two. Which one floats up on the water better then the other.

We have copperheads and rattle snakes on our farm in Tn. When the weather gets warm I always carry a small North American Arms S.S. 22 mag with rat shot.Small easy to carry in pocket and does a quick job on poisonous snakes.
Don't shoot the good ones!

Yes.. a revolver with snake shot would be the ideal carry around the hood gun. Its what I carry when I am on the tractor. A colt cobra with snake shot.
