Default pinging from truck

I have a 2003 dodge ram 1500 with a 4.7l 318 motor
this motor has 53000 miles and I have noticed a pinging lately at certain rpm's
Any mechanics out there can give me a place to start looking for a fix.
thanks.

You can try by using a higher octane fuel. Also the engine timing may be too high.

Most modern motors are computer controlled. Maybe a "knock sensor" which feeds info to computer. Before computers, 318s were notorious for spark knocking.

You might laugh, but I believe I would try a heavy dose of RingFree or SeaFoam to clean out combustion chambers before going any further.

May be as simple as winter fuel mixture. If you've got ethanol instead of MTBE, it atomizes poorly in cold weather, causing pinging.

4.7 l is not 318 C.I.D.

4.9 = 300 cubic inches

5.0 = 302 cid

5.4 = about 330 cid

use some sea foam and better gas.

Welder's right, Duh-Huh to me!

I come up with 4.7 as about 287 cid. No wonder it's sparknocking trying to drag around 5000# pick up.

Forget the SeaFoam go straight to NITROUS

I'm wrong your right 287 c.i.
All they offered in 2003 either that or the 5.9l gas guzzler.
Hemi was offered 6 months after I bought the truck.
Never had a problem with power from this engine.
I used to pull a 6000 # boat with it at 65 mph no problem
Just ever since it turned 50000 miles a heard a pinging in the 2000 to 2500 rpm range
I noticed it even more drive upstate to go hunting.
Thought maybe I could try and attack this problem on my own.
No other issues with the truck.

I've got the same motor in my dakota. Couple of places I would start with would be changing the factory Champion plugs out for a set of Bosch platnum's (I went with the +2 variety). If you haven't already tried it, try higher octane fuel. I run 87 octane in my 90% of the time, but have noticed that it is much better performance wise to run high octane when towing at interstate speeds.
