Default Yes Martha, that is half of a submarine out front of Deale, MD on the Chesapeake Bay

Friends sent me these pictures taken today off Holland Point. I've gotten several texts asking about it so I thought I'd share what that was all about here.

Yep, that is in fact the bow of a US Virginia Class Nuclear Attack Submarine that is under construction.

Virginia class submarines are built in sections, which are assembled at Electric Boat in Connecticut and by Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. The yards share final assembly responsibilities, shipping modules back and forth on barges.

Imagine the dollar value attached to it along with the replacement cost and schedule penalties . I sure it doesn't have all the electronics installed yet but still .

That Captain has roughly $900 million dollars in hardware on that barge.

Doubtful, that is a point A to B delivery.

Protected waters. Virginia, up the Bay, through the C&D canal out and up to New London.

Not really sure - haven't been there much. Due to CORVID-19 we delayed the start of our season until 16 May.

The guys that have started fishing are doing very well. So well we have out of town guys moving their boats to Happy Harbor.

Very cool! I've visited EB a number of times - there are some electrical and imaging enclosures on SSGN and VA subs that yours truly designed. That was a cool job.

Thanks for the pics.

I KNEW this had to be VERY cool since YOU posted it - always admire your posts and your YEARS in "the silent service".

I remember LONG ago when talking to a guy that worked at NNS&D(?) or the Naval Shipyard(?) in Portsmouth that when they decommissioned a nuke sub, they had to leave some of the hull "opened up" so that USSR satellites could verify the "dismantling" of the reactor and/or the missile tubes. Found that fascinating.

THANKS for the pics - AND you service!

Regards,

Another good picture from today. It looks like they have been conducting weather avoidance before proceeding North through the C&D, Delaware Bay and up the coast to Connecticut.

I wonder how close you could get to that thing before you got shot at.
