Default 2006 4 runner trailer light adapter???

We just bought a new 4 runner a few months back and of course there is no adapter to fit the plug under the bumper for trailer lights. Is this a special plug I have to buy from toyota or is there some generic one available at parts stores? I have no idea or clue what this type of plug is for, is this normal on newer trucks or what?

Thanks for any help?

Under the bumper........so is that a seven pin you are referring to or a four pin? Either way no matter, yes there is adapters to convert a seven pin junction at the truck to a four pin on your trailer. http://www.delcity.net/delcity/servl...=632427&page=1
I would also be surprised if you don't have a four pin connection already on your wiring harness at the back of the truck. I know my Dodge came with the seven pin in the bumper and I have a four pin tied up just up under the bumper.....slide under the truck and take a look.

I bought my adapter at walmart for 8 or 10 bucks. It looks like this.

7 to 4 pin is your standard adapter, but if your trailer brakes lock out electronically when your reverse lights come I believe you'll need a 7 to 5 pin adapter.

Here's mine adapter that came with the truck when it was new.....I've only used it once on a rental utility dolly trailer. When I got my truck I rewired the trailer to accomodate the seven pin.

The connector that's there is typically called a 7-pin RV plug. You can buy an off-the shelf 7-pin RV to 4- or 5-pin adaptor at most any auto parts place (or U-haul, or hardware store) or wire one up yourself. Connector pinouts are pretty easy to find online.

Thanks, exactly the info I needed.

Do these adapters fit tightly? Can they be left in without falling out?

jky,

If one is having difficulty in finding the wiring diagram on line one can always look on the package of the 7 pin plug.....they generally include the wiring diagram with proper colour codes.

high life,

Yes they can be left in because the spring loaded lid of your receptacle has a tab which locks over the dohickey circled in red.....but why would you leave it in? Sure as sh!t someone will steal it!
