Default CD Advice

I need help on opening an cd (bank or ?). I have never dealt with certificate of deposits. Who pays the top returns? how long should I do? Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go to www.bankrate.com. The site is a bit confusing, but search for highest rates for the time frame you are looking for. Don't look for highest yields in your area.

It's pretty easy and a lot better than the big banks. If you have any local banks in your area they can be competitive as well.

You may want to take a look at ing direct also, not an endorsement, they just have done very well for me.

I should add that you can sometimes get a better rate on new-issue Government Agency bonds than on CD's.

Ing Direct should be listed on the bankrate.com site.

ING savings account is yielding 4.5% alone (and you can get to it at any time....). their CDs are better too.

I was surprised to find that my local bank had a special going and got .25 more than others. But after the special....who knows?
