Default Can property surveyors put stakes in a road?

lots of surveying being done around here. in my subdivision, streets are mostlt asphalt. I have noticed surveying "pins" driven throught a small colored piece of marked tape in several areas. is this legal..these pins are like really big roofing nails (large head) and are driven fully into the asphault and in the roadway where the car tires go .. I asked one team whats up, they said we put these out so we can quickly find our way if we have to come back. I asked will they work their way out of the road and cause flat tires??? is this something new?

Common where there’s paving. Harmless.

Is this really what you worry about as you go about daily life?

Relax. Your tires are safe from the nefarious survey pins.

Get their card. Save it. If you ever end up with a nail in your tire call them.

Done all the time. Perfectly normal. Don't know if one ever came out and ended up in a tire. There are many more likely hazards on the road than this.

There are pins in the road all over around here. Surveyors do it, utility workers do it and the DOT inspectors do it. I am not sure how they figure out which is which.

Imagine the hysteria the media could create if they knew about the lurking survey pin danger...

Well I never called them stakes. We usually refer to them as pins. And yes they will double up a square of survey tape and drive it in the asphalt. It’s done all the time.

I've driven a bunch , don't worry about them . They're everywhere if you start looking for them - they'll be a couple at every intersection . It's how the world has been built for a long time .

For surveying purposes, they need to find the middle of the road to get measures on where the lot lines are.

I walk several miles a day at lunch. I see many of these pins and none have moved in years. Now I do see many other hazards that you could worry about. Tons of nails and screws. Even a steak knife once in the middle of an intersection.

PK nail or mag-nail. Typically will have survey flagging or a metal ‘shiner’ or ‘washer’ to help locate or id.

typically the color of the flagging will tell you what it is there for. Around here - pink = boundary, orange = control.

and no, they won’t come out of the asphalt.

[edit] - yes, they can do that. They might be marking centerlines of row’s, they might be marking property corners, it might be control for further surveying.
