Default OK THT geniuses what is this?

Looks sorta like a thru hull transducer but isnt. Has solid wire, not stranded. Found out by street.

I'm going with temp sensor. Put a meter on the leads on ohm setting and warm up the probe, see if readings change. Could be a thermocouple, then do same test with meter in the mV range.

It looks like the sensor that goes in the top of a water meter lid so they can read them remotely. Google Automated meter reading.

Default Uh Oh your in cold water

You may receive written notification of its origin next month when your water bill is due because it is a radio interrogated sending antenna for remote water billing, Not kidding. Go look for a flat black plastic plate with a matching hole. If you are lucky the meter reader may have id'd it as defective and tech replacing just tossed the old one.

Looks a lot like an ultrasonic tank level sensor. Looks like the transducer part. Works very similar to a transducer on a boat, but meant to determine the level in a tank, like a heating oil tank for a home furnace, or industrial process equipment. Third pic in post 5 looks like the piezoelectric emitter/receiver or transducer.

There are usually 3 wires. Is that a 3rd wire broken off on the last photo of the opening post?

The thread length does look like a thru-hull transducer, but I don't recognize the cross pattern as any modern brand. Thru-hull outer pieces are typically smooth for less turbulence. Tank sensors don't have turbulence issues and can have raised features with no effect on the signal.

Winner! That's exactly what it is.

I used to design the damn things for a large metering company.
