Everyone here has made valid points.
The only notable exceptions are the ones about miracle whip. That crap is nasty and it definitely turns whatever you put it on into a non-sandwich.

I was talking with a guy at work about this and he had a great explanation. He said it is kind of like pornography... he can't define it but he knows it when he sees it.
Maybe that's the best definition of a sandwich.
