Default Why do people stand 5 to 6 inches behind you in line?

I see it all of the time at gas stations and the cafeteria at my work. A line of 6 or 7 people and the next guy in line is standing 5 or 6 inches away from the person at the counter. It's like they are trying to breath down your neck or blow in your ear. Then give everyone a dirty look when they smell their double onion taco on their breath. What's with this, I wish people would understand personal space; at least 5 or 6 feet of separation.

This, and when you’re walking at a mall,or on a busy street etc, people walking 10 inches behind you, and staying there!!
I call them backwalkers. You can hear every word of their conversation, and they yours ! WHY ? I will move over, stop and let them pass. This drives me crazy.

Try walking with a medical mask on, and throw in a cough or two for good measure.

My wife's mother is from Germany, and for whatever reason I've noticed that people from Europe don't seem to feel the same about personal space as we do. One day we were in the kitchen and she's talking close enough to me I could feel her breath... I told her "mom... I love you... but if you're close enough to me that I can touch you, you're too close" and I stuck my arm out like a stiff arm. She hasn't been within the zone since.

Well if that gives you the heebie-jeebies........I highly suggest you never, ever, under any circumstances put yourself in an itinerary......
.........that requires clearing through incoming flights customs at Hong Kong International Airport.

I have noticed that Americans have a unique sense of personal space. We tend to like our space and like lots of if. Most parts of the world that I have been in people tend to be right on top of each other especially in lines.

My bitch is people that walk down narrow sidewalks in twos or threes and don't move back for oncoming people, it's like they're joined at the hip

Yep, this. I honestly think it stems from our country being so large, and all that goes with that.

There is no national mass transit that shuttles us all like cattle. We like space to roam free

I'd wager we'd get along pretty will with Russians when it comes to queuing.

When I was in China...there IS NO personal space. You have to get over that real quick and just start mowing people over.

easy solution that works when standing still and someone is breathing on your neck: look down and spot their foot - specifically the tip of their toe. Make an innocent move like you are shifting weight, then come down with your heel on their toe. Works beautiful. I weigh about 230, so i know it hurts! Have received a couple of "OUCH!" reactions over the years, to which I always look back like I have no idea what the heck is going on. Also, in this day and age of everyone glued to their phones, pull out the phone and pretend to look at it while you spot your target and put ALL your weight on your one foot for just a second.

You're welcome!!!

Last time I breached the 6 ft. rule was July 7th, 1994.

That date is burned in my brain. It was check-out time at the Best Western.

I was young. The girl I violated the night prior was even younger.

As I waited in line to pay, the old dude in front of me just started to randomly fart. Every step. Every shift of his weight, he farted. Hard and deep.

I'm guessing he hit the German buffet the night before.

To this day, I will ALWAYS give 24-36 inches to the old man in front of me......
