Default Captiva Island

Suppose to go to Captiva Island in August for the first time. Care to share the pros, cons and things to do while we are there? I'm definitely interested in fishing while some of the family wants to play golf.

The Bubble Room...very eccentric restaurant, TONS of old nick nacks and vintage things on the walls, ceilings, glass top tables, etc. You can look in all directions and spend hours looking at things. Oh..and the food is really good, and deserts....HUGE portions!
Key Lime Bistro...fun outdoor place, we stayed right next door.

Great place, great fishing as long as the red tide isn't around. Beach fishing can be awesome. If you are not from a hot weather state beware gets scorching hot. We stay at the adjoining island Sanibel every year and every year we see people with bad burns. Go out early, at 11 hit the pool and cool off, siesta from 12-4 or shop, then you can hit the beach again. Sanibel has more tourist stuff and a lot more places to eat. If you are flying in you can rent combos at Whitneys https://whitneysbaitandtackle.com/rentals/, you will pass it on the way to Captiva. There also is an art gallery Jungle Drums that's cool Jungle Drums Gallery Home | Jungle Drums Gallery

August will be perfect. Should be quiet, as everyone that tells you how they do it up north is still up north. Get a 1-2pm tee time and have the course to yourself if it doesn't rain at 3:30.

Avon skin so soft if you go out and about at night. Or long sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes and socks. Noseeums can be a bitch! But a fun place.

Yep, this. stayed at tween Waters in may per some ThT insight.

Both restaurants were awesome, and also The Mucky Duck.

Bonita Bills in Ft. Myers Beach is not to be missed. Bring cash.

I've stumbled back to the yacht at 2 am from tween waters area to south seas since the trolley stopped at midnight. Hint, my brother had the foresight to bring a back pack full of roadies for the long walk home.

Excellent. Captiva rolls up the carpet at 10 it seems.

That is quite a hike...

All the fishing down there is C&R only this year because of the tide. It’s great trout fishing. White curly tails.

take a lot of money......

I will share what not to do, especially in August. Do not under any circumstance after dark, open the windows nor expect to sit out in a screened in porch or pool area.
The mosquitoes will push the noseeums thru the screen holes to force you outside so they can have a bite at you also!

Not just joking either. " No-See-Ums are also referred to as Biting Midges, Biting Gnats, Punkies or Sand Flies. With grayish or yellowish bodies, the adults resemble mosquitoes, although they are smaller than mosquitoes. In fact, they are so small they can get through screens on windows and doors."

I figured he and he brother were the crew. Apologies if I am mistaken.

Why August that is about the absolute worst time for Golf in SW FL. Hot all day until the thunderstorms come in and the only worse place to be then a boat is a goof course. On a boat you can at least make an effort to dodge them.

Early morning snook with sand fleas right at the waters edge. If you're going to South Seas..north end of the island, bay side at slack tide = snook just off the rocks. 4 ft of water right off the beach = all the sand dollars you want. Yes on the save room for the cake!!!

I love the dessert at the Bubble Room. But the dinner is overrated. I do like the lunch. But I get the butter crunch ice cream pie almost every night I’m there and we get an order of bubble bread once or twice. I like Doc Ford’s food better.

Always thought the mucky duck was overrated. I’m still boycotting the green flash over them tearing down Timmy’s Nook. I am a fan of the bakery counter at Bailey’s. Whitney’s is great. Jensen’s is worth a stop I get a ice cream from the freezer and get a shirt.

I have a house near Ding Darling and spend the summers down there as well as most school holidays. Summer is the best time to be there before the crowds show up. Fishing is excellent, nothing is crowded, decent food, a little warm, and plenty to stay busy. Right across Blind Pass are Mad Hatter which is the best nice restaurant on either island as well as Lazy Flamingo which is an excellent bar. Cip’s and George and Wendy’s (live music) are worth a visit and breakfast at the Over Easy Cafe is always good. I agree on the deli counter at Bailey’s, we pick up something there fairly often. The Paper Fig has great take home meals if you want to pick something up to cook at home.

As far as things to do, shelling on any beach but especially at Lighthouse and Blind Pass, fishing any beach but especially Bowman’s, Blind Pass, and Ding Darling, stop at Whitney’s (I’ve bought a lot of fishing stuff from him and Whit is never too busy to give advice or show you the ropes), bird watch in the nature preserve, take a day trip to Cayo Costa, rent a boat on Tarpon Bay and fish, rent a pontoon at Jensen’s and go wherever you want, etc.

Had my first grouper sandwich at Timmy’s Nook in 1989. Loved that place.
