Default Hit and run question

Long story short...A guy swerved into my lane today and hit my mirror with his and broke mine. I turned around and came back and he had pulled over to the side of the road.

When i got out I just said hey what happened, you broke my mirror. He basically started to deny it. I said well im taking a picture of your license plate. He jumped back in his truck and drove off.

I called the police and they sent out an officer who took down all the info. She gave me a report number for insurance purposes.

He was in a company truck which i did not get the info of. I can get the company info im sure if needed.

What would you say the chances of actually recovering the cost of the damages are?

small claims case against the company is pretty simple and likely they'd pay up if its a legit company

Shoot I hit another trucks mirror in traffic a month ago. Didn’t hurt mine but busted his. We pulled over and turned out he lived a couple blocks from me. They came in pairs off eBay I installed the broken one for him and gave him the other Incase the other side gets hit.
cost me less than 100. Bucks to do the right thing. Some people suck.

This happened to me. What sucks is now you have an accident on your car fax. I didn’t even think about that when i called the police, but i should have just let it go.

I think you'll get paid but it might take a while.

My experience: about 10 months ago I was rear ended on 295 in DC. Woman behind me tried to change lanes but there was already a car in that lane. She bounced off them and into me. She stayed on the scene but sat in her car with the windows up, refusing to talk to me or the other driver. Cops got her info, filed the report. When her insurance company called her she dodged their calls and wouldn't call them back.

I paid my deductible, my insurance company went after her insurance company, and about six months later I got a check for the amount of my deductible.

if I were you, I would talk to my insurance company. You know they have seen this before. They've got a process.

No, I wouldn't turn into Insurance for just a mirror. Contact the company owner and talk first. They may (i used to) just get you a check on small things like that.

Aside: I have an f250 that i have owned since 2002. I have smacked mirrors on small roads with other trucks 3 times!!! first time I bought a full replacement complete mirror. Second time i lived with scuffed plastic and just replaced the mirror, third time i bought a PIECE of mirror and glued it to the broken mirror surface. As long as it passes inspection....

Just happened to me last week. Small narrow back road and mirror to mirror collision. Trashed my mirror. No one stopped, but it was a mutually at fault accident. Same thing happened a few years back, similar situation. Other vehicle chased me. Wanted all kinds of insurance info and I told him to F off and he was welcome to call the cops. Again, mutual at fault. Nothing ever became of it. No one was swerving or on the wrong side of the road.

Yes peruse it.
No insurance involvement.
Give me the year make mirror info and paint code....I can get you the mirror, I'll paint it ship it to you...most are 3 10 mil bolts...5 minute install.
average cost painted and installed $275.00
Some are very inexpensive....while some are insanely high

Or

Go to local junk yard get a mirror and get a color matching spray bomb from the local parts store...do it yourself...
Mirror probably $30 at the yard
Spray bomb color can to match $55
3 hours of your time....done

I emailed my insurance guy but he was out of the office yesterday. I should hear back from him today. The mirror is about 300 for an original one. Aftermarket is about $100 but had one before and it turned to shit in a year.

Its my older work truck so i dont care about any carfax reports that may show up.

I would NOT involve the insurance company. They find a way to increase rates for the craziest crap.

For $300, don't bother. Unless you can prove, without a shadow of a doubt (like a dashcam or something), he'll just say you swerved into him. He will lie and deny any accusation you make. In the end, no judge will find in your favor.

Really? I thought an insurance claim or body shop claim had to be made. I didn't think a mere police report would do that?

If the guy left that a hit and run and the police should go after the guy who left. What did the cop do after finding out the other party left?

No judge involved for $300. Small claims at best. Not worth the time to sit in court waiting to get called.

There are certainly judges in Small Claims here in Maryland. This is if I understand you correctly.

In Georgia (or maybe my municipality specifically), it was all digital. Meaning the police gave me a code and website where I could view a copy of the police report. I'm assuming that software is also connected to carfax. In my case, it did very minor damage to my vehicle. I only reported because I was hoping they could catch the person (I had partial plate number and vehicle description), however, they responded too late. When I went to trade my car in, the dealer showed me the accident history, etc.
