I’ve made my living as a gunman. What I have learned over 20+ years is that caliber selection is like asking which woman is more beautiful. Its in the eye of the beholder (or beer holder). There are so many variables to consider. Best bet is to go out and shoot a few hundred rounds through each platform you are considering and see what feels best to you.

Ballistically all 3 are close enough. 9mm is the most common and the cheapest to shoot so that's what I use. The only semi auto caliber I consider a step above everything else is full power 10mm.

9MM for me but 45. is sweet. 9 is a lot cheaper for the range.

Good question that's on many people's mind. Everything I've read shows there is no perfect round or caliber. Big and Slow..45. Fast and small...9mm. In the middle...40. Never fired it but have heard from.a few friends that it's pretty snappy esp from Glocks. All those friends shot the Glock and traded them for something else.

I like all 3 but partial to 40 then 9 then 45..

I used to carry a Glock 22 (40 cal for over 20 years) but have carried a Glock 17 9mm (for almost 10 years combined now)

40 cal.makes a.nice hole and packs a.nice punch with good velocity..

Nightstand gun? Listen, if someone is breaking into your house in the middle of the night and you grab a handgun? You're doing it wrong.

All the aforementioned pistol calibers are about even in terms of performance. Shot placement is far, far more important. The fbi was about 10 years behind modern science on this one but eventually they figured it out.

A pistol is what you use to get you to a real gun. Better to have the real gun close at hand.

Merry Christmas.

Personally, I’m so invested in .40 I stuck with it. Other that a g43 carry, that’s all I got accessible.

In your home, long guns. If you cannot have a long gun near you for whatever reason, use a handgun as a defensive means until you can reach a long gun. Only when you are properly armed, behind cover, and your loved ones safe should you call 911.

After that, shoot from advantage behind cover until authorities arrive. Think, top of the stairs or from a prone position behind cover down a long hallway. You want to be protected in a position of advantage shooting into a kill box.
Fair fights are for idiots. It's your home. Prep the fields of fire and kill boxes in your favor. Put the enemy in the light and you in darkness. Stop the threat permanently before they even realize where you are.

Yes, this is somewhat simplified. Of course you will need to move if your loved ones are in another part of the house but that is probably the ONLY reason I'd move.

This is my protocol. Yours may vary.

Merry Christmas!

I like my 1911 45 When I run out of ammo I can take another down by just throwing the gun at them. I also have FN & H&K’s In .45 always liked the round.

My recent purchase of a SBR’d PS90 with 50 rounds of 5.7 May be my new night stand choice however.

Nightstand would be my Taurus Judge (.410 shells). If I have to shoot it and miss it won't go through the house into the neighbors. If I can fight my way to my safe then it would be the all-end selection of the Remington 870 Home Defender (6 shot with 00 buck).

In the car usually the S&W M&P 9mm Compact but the Kimber 1911 is always an option.

If penetration is a concern you should go to #1 Buck. It is a better personal defense round, #1 Buck puts more total energy on the target, provides a denser pattern (more pellets) and does not penetrate like #00. LEAs use #00 specifically because it provides much better penetration of car blocks, house walls, etcetera.
