Come on man, this is THT, you ask a question, then get answers to other questions! Sometimes, if it is before happy hour, you might actually get a couple answers to your question.

What has the out of state people done so bad for you to develop so much hatred? Do you know how many people count on "northern money"? After reading all of the smartassed comments I am getting a whole new view of you people that seem to think you own the state.

Hold on their Sparky, not everyone hates Northerners! I know most Floridians are happy that we have no state employment tax and cheap living in general because of our tourists. So we do appreciate you. We just like to mess with you, because, well, because it is fun! Especially Canadians, they are really fun to mess with! Most of us love you though Russ, so don’t get those thermal undies in a bunch!

I've got a good snow story.

My son while doing his SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape) program as a Marine had to go to Maine. Until then he had never seen snow and was essentially a water baby in Florida... surfs, dives, fishes, boating etc. , like the rest of us. So off he goes to Maine in December. No snow yet, but it's cold. He arrives at the 12000 acre site and to make a long story short... the first night out in the boonies, it snows 25". He told me he had never been that cold and never warmed up over the 4 days he was out there. 1/2 the outfit removed/evacuated for various injuries and cold weather issues.

if anyone has ever gone through SERE the intent is to get to the LZ without being captured... no one has ever done that 'cause it's rigged for capture. However no encounter over the 4 days, no contact with hostiles (fake ones) because they were all snowed in at the LZ. They just sat there and waited for the students to arrive. So once the soldiers in training arrive at the LZ, they all start running through the snow towards what they thought was their refuge.... lol, all were captured and then the bad shi* -stuff happened. Simulated torture. To me it would have been real torture, but i guess the trainers know what they're doing.

Born and raised in Miami. I saw snow when I was 27. Then I went to Colorado and I was blown away. That was alot of snow. It was nice and all but you can keep the snow and associated crap that goes with it.

Ok I have calmed down. I am jealous of you guys that live in the south, especially this time of the year. I plan on wintering in Florida when I retire but I promise I won't tell anyone how we do anything up north. I can't even think of anything I could say about living in the north other than I will be glad when I can live where it's warm in the winter. My theory is the older I get the closer I want the temperature to my age.

I never knew that people in the south didn't like people from the north, I never got that impression from anyone when I have been down to the Key's. The Key's are my favorite place, I absolutely love the whole lifestyle which is why I want to spend my winters in the Islamorada area. Not all of us from the north are the way you guys have implied.

When I was little, used to go down to Montego Bay, Jamaica a lot....Aunt 'n Uncle had a condo down there, they spent a lot of time there. I became friends with a kid I'd see at the beach there a lot (Dr's Cave Beach). Oliver I think his name was. Anyways, I recall trying to explain snow to him...he was a local boy that never traveled outside of Jamaica. Hard trying to describe it to him, the cold, and how it would melt.

Spent 6 weeks there in '85 ish. December and part of Jan.

Snowed like hell the entire time.

Bar none, the nicest people I have ever met and i have lived lots of places that are supposed to have nice people. Made the snow bearable.

Good people and good memories.

Grew up outside of Phila and went to school in western Nebraska, snow skiing in Colorado every winter weekend. Plenty of snow growing up. In 1977, wife and I took our daughter who was 7 to in-laws home in NJ over Christmas so she could see snow, which she enjoyed. Got back to Miami where we lived and on Jan 19, 1977 we had snow in Miami. All my fruit trees froze and died

What have you done that was so bad? Did you really not know? Virtually everything that makes no sense in what used to be a sub-tropical paradise. Huge developments with uncountable finger peninsulas and dredged canals, desert-like subdivisions with zero trees, the wrong political party, air-conditioning, Miami Beach (chose your lifestyle section), multiple kinds of pollution, "northern money", corrupt politicians aka land developers,....the list is endless. You are right, we real Floridians have not owned the state for many decades.

Never found hatred while visiting FLA. In fact most strangers I've met and had the opportunity to converse with were very nice and welcoming. Spent a month in Cape Coral last March and it was almost like old home week while taking daily walks in the neighborhood because you seen some of the same neighbors each time you walked.

Russ, a few points.

First, I am a Tar Heel not a Gator.
Second, the Keys are not "the South".

The dislike I have seen is more the result of the "holier than thou" attitude that so many yankees display when they first move South.
Once they discover that us "good ole boys" ain't as dumb as they first thought, that attitude does seem to disappear.

Snow can at least be fun.
It's that never ending freakin' darkness that finally got me.

You seem to think it was northern carpetbaggers flew into town and decided to build. If I had to guess, it was Florida developers that got the idea to build and sell to Northerners. They probably did get money from northern banks to finance their projects, but had to first convince the banks that they knew what they were doing and would be able to turn a profit.
