Default PLB Recommendation Needed

My daughter who lives in Seattle has gotten into hiking and camping. Some backwoods
stuff already, but she likes it and will probably get more into it.

I'd like to get her a PLB for Christmas and would appreciate any suggestions. I've done some looking
already but the reviews I've seen for the ones in the $300 range don't really fill me with confidence.

Any suggestions????

Decide between a PLB and a satellite messenger.

I'd think a PLB's advantages for marine use are not in play for land based activities, and that multi-day hiking and camping trips could benefit from messaging capabilities. You'll pay for that via a subscription, but well worth it for your child. Brand wise, I have no recommendation.

Agree that a Satellite Messenger is a better choice for this purpose

See this thread. ACR sale or ACRatex

PLBs offer something that satellite messaging units do not. They are monitored directly by the authorities who can send help. The satellite messengers require a 3rd party in the middle. That may or may not be a huge issue, but it is something to consider.

Some PLBs do offer a subscription to send non emergency messages as well. I believe ACR does, but not sure which models.

Fast Find. This is exactly what a PLB is designed for. Supplement with a spot trace or the like.
