UPDATE: Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa announced today that additional charges have been filed in killing of a hunting dog.

Lippa said Adam Beck, who was arrested over the weekend on an animal cruelty charge, has also been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, two counts of destruction of property, assault, two counts of larceny, and maiming or killing of an animal. Beck was taken into custody again and later released on a $5,000 bond on the new charges, Lippa said.

In addition, Lippa said Beck's wife, Leigh Beck, has been charged with two counts of child endangerment: leaving loaded firearms within a child's reach

A Caroline County man has been charged with animal cruelty in the fatal shooting of a hunting dog, authorities

Caroline Sheriff Tony Lippa said a hunter called shortly after 5 p.m. Friday to report that his dog had been shot and killed during a hunt in the Chilesburg area of the county. According to Lippa, the man said the signal from the dog’s GPS tracking collar had suddenly stopped on property owned by Adam Beck.

When the officers returned with the warrants, Beck surrendered without incident, Lippa said. He was booked at the regional jail and released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

Lippa said animal control deputies found the dead hunting dog and a damaged tracking collar on the property. Deputies also seized two AR–15 rifles, the sheriff said.

Wont happen if you keep your damn deer dogs on the lease property and not running all over private property. I could not do this myself but I have been mad enough that it has crossed my mind.

Was the dog wearing orange?

He will claim it was a deer/coyote/rabbit whatever.

My dogs are run in the woods daily but NEVER without their orange vest during deer hunting season. My wife has her orange on also. (pics soon)

So it's a felony now to shoot a hunting dog? When I grew up the boys in WV even saw a hunting dog they would be shot. Hunting isn't hunting if you use dogs anyway.....

Have come across many running dogs over the years. Have never felt it necessary to shoot one. Lots of people o grew up around would brag about this stuff. Any dog chasing deer is a dead dog to them, as if their life depended on it.

on the other side, I love dogs and ones that do what they’re bred to do. BUT, if you’re going to run your dogs on something, your ass better be out there with them.

not a fan of radio collars and drive around in a truck. It’s not hunting.

Dog is trained to chase deer. Dog is not trained to read no trespassing signs or stop at fences (I'd be rich if I could figure this one out - shut up about the electric fences and shock collars that would not work on large tracts). Deer does not respect private property boundary and jumps fence. Dog owner tries to cut-off dogs because he doesn't want be out all night tracking them. Some get through. Sh_t happens. Why so mad?

Was the dog running deer?
I think of a bird dog not a deer dog when I see "hunting dog".

Maybe I assumed to much.

Interesting that there appears to be a new law allowing dogs and hunters to access private land.

“While we are generally opposed to Virginia’s current trespassing and free roaming exception for hunting dogs and their owners, we would never hold the actions of an animals owner against the animal itself.”

Out here, it’s illegal to run deer/elk with dogs. In many western states, it’s perfectly legal to kill such an animal. That dog is endangering the welfare of the game animals, which are the property of all the state’s citizens. It’s also illegal for people to maliciously harass most animals.

On some of the forums here in georgia and SC these deer dog threads go 20 pages and get heated. It's as bad as politics. Like most things, a few bad apples mess it up for everyone.

Too many dog hunters here in Alabama are just a big POS. They have this habit of releasing their dogs on other peoples property to run the deer back on to their property. Use to work with a guy who had a bunch that was routinely doing this to his families property. They asked politely many times for the guy to quit doing it.........he told them to F-O that he wasn't on their land and he could not control where his dogs went. Dogs finally spooked a huge deer my Buddy had been scouting for a year and a half. He proceeded to take out 3 of the dogs from about 350 yards with a 7mm Mag. He put them in his truck under a tarp and headed back to get his backhoe to bury them. When he got to the paved road the Game Warden (who happened to be a friend of his brother) was parked in the field road. My buddy pulls beside him, got out, leaned up against the door of his own truck and started talking to him. The warden said their neighbor had complained that morning that someone was running dogs on their property..........the Warden said I heard some shooting did you get anything. My Buddy said it wasn't me.......he said the Warden just paused and stared at the ground. My buddy looked down and there was a puddle of blood 2 or 3 inches wide and a couple feet coming out from under his truck. Warden just said have good day and moved on. The dog hunter suspected one of the adjacent land owners took them out but he ad so many people pissed at him he couldn't figure it out.
Of course in Alabama the law is pretty broad and you are exempted from the cruelty statute for several reasons most notably:
This article shall not apply to any of the following persons or institutions:
(3) Any person who kills a dog or cat found outside of the owned or rented property of the owner or custodian of the dog or cat when the dog or cat threatens immediate physical injury or is causing physical injury to any person, animal, bird, or silvi-cultural or agricultural industry.
And we can also legally light them up with a BB gun for crapping on your lawn......
(4) A person who shoots a dog or cat with a BB gun not capable of inflicting serious injury when the dog or cat is defecating or urinating on the person's property.
