sticker shock on non-boating things
Some things are just so ridiculas I don't see how they stay in business. I'm sure everyone has been blindsided at one time or another but this happened to me yesterday....
My wife wants to replace our window blinds with something more in style so she had a local company that does window treatments come by and give us an estimate on new fabric roller shades, drapes, and a couple of valances to hide the hardware. After "discounts", 16 windows total and the quote was $11,300! If I didn't go with motoraized (w/ remote) shades the bill would still be over $10,000. I figured $3500 but $11,300? The drapes and valances for 5 windows alone were over $6,000. The guy even admitted it has no return on investmet as only plantation shutters have some return. Fortunately the wife sees this as absurd too. |

you ever bought any faa approved stuff?
aviation grade makes marine grade seam cheap |
My wife is working with an interior designer to furnish our 3600 sq ft home...every time we get a bill it’s an argument. Lady wanted 5500 to have a wooden banquet built in a plain craftsman style. I built the same thing on a Saturday for about 700 in lumber and even added in some hidden drawer storage as a bonus. Felt good about myself until she then spent 2k on the cushions for it....next spring is going to be expensive at the tackle shop

OP We have a modern house with casement windows so got away with simple roll down blinds from the shade store and they ran almost $400/window. Obviously Much nicer than a $30 Home Depot roll up shade but still crazy money. |
My tax bill always gets me. And all the "hidden" taxes in everyday things. Ever stay at a hotel? Some of them have 5 lines of taxes added. I just recently rented a car in Chicago and they charged 21% tax. WTF???
Socialism is coming one way or another. It's not just in the form of income tax. |
Have you looked at the new medicines? An eye treatment at $800,000 per eye. Other drugs $40-50,000 per month. Even if your insurance pays 80% it stll adds up

I needed a simple cable to interface between my ipod and my motorcycle's stereo. I was prepared to spend double what a comparable cable would be since it only fit that brand bike...When - at the dealership -I was told the price would be $135 the word "Shit!" involuntarily slipped out of my mouth. The owner of the store heard and asked me to leave. His words (besides "get out!") were " If you're so cheap that you worry about $100,go somewhere else. We don't want customers like you." ...I bought one off ebay for $30.
Since then I've spent 10's of thousands of "motorcycle-related" dollars elsewhere. |
I'm waiting for someone to create a program that blocks Pinterest & Houzz
I'd buy it :) |
I have a pair of redwing boots and decided to replace the cushion insole thing (not sure the proper name)
They wanted $70 for them! wtf there was nothing special about them.... |
Kitchen. Recently redid kitchen after 20 years. 50K+.
Total, down to stud remodel of 3500 sq ft farmhouse was 125K 20 years back. That was everything, including 2, 3 ton groundwater heat pumps. |
I rarely do fast food but I went thru Jack in the box the other day, mainly
due to poor planning on my part. $9 bucks for chicken strips and fries! Then I went to ACE and got a small package of steel wool, $6 bucks! I quit rebuilding boats, everything got too expensive, , turn key is cheaper now days . |
I disagree. Things are too cheap. Just think about what goes into producing these things.....
Gallon of has under $3. Milk under $4 Pound of chicken $2. Dozen eggs under $2. We get clothes for the kids under $5. Some good quality wines for under $9. |

The $800k is per eye... It is a gene therapy medication which arrests the progression of a congenital condition ending in blindness. One of the reasons for extremely high price is so few people are impacted. Similar technology has resulted in a treatment for spinal muscular atrophy. In severe cases SMA kills children before the age of 10. This treatment is over $2m. Once again, very small patient pool. Very exciting technology, but until they come up with a treatment for something impacting a larger patient population the unit costs are going to be startling. |
