Are you sure your American cars had any shocks and tires with tread on them. In my fifty years of driving I have never had a vehicle, from my 3400 lb Ford Maverick to my 6000 lb Chevrolet Silverado to a 8000lb empty Ford F-600 to a 20,000 lb John Deere 4440 not easily take a corner at the speed limit. It was fun drifting that tractor around the corners on the dirt road between my farms. I did have a moment with a 72 Kawasaki H2 750 at 30 mph over the limit but those things were know it be ill handling.

Now in North Carolina they do not change the speed limits for corners (at least last time I was there) In Florida tight corners on two lane roads are 45 or even 30 mph. In North Carolina a two lane road will have a 60 mph speed limit regardless of the corners. The locals drive flat out no matter what make vehicle they are driving. When I was a teen my family spent a year in Tennessee. My brother was the piano player for a church traveling singing group. One weekend they went to NC in a Dodge 15 passenger van with a 383 engine. The driver was squalling the tires on corners where from the passenger seat all my brother could see was tree tops. There was an RV behind them trying to pass! He said it was taking right hand corners on the wrong side of the road and several times it almost spun out.
