Default Iguana; free gaffing

This may sound like a RussH story, but it happened.

Late yesterday I was cleaning up around the pool and I heard this crash in the palms at the rear of the yard. Look back to see what happened and a 5-6' lizard is running through the property. I have never seen one in my yard before! Gets to the edge of the pool and stops, big nasty claws, then we have a 20 sec stare down before he goes in. Ok, how am I going to take care of this? Quickly grab a shovel and a machete and a net. Nope need a better plan. None of the guns were a good fit for the job. Grabbed a length of pvc and poured some chemicals down it directly into its nostrils. That knocked it out and now how to remove it from the pool. Went and got the net (not big enough) and a large trash can and returned to find it awake. Ran to the fishing rack and pick out a 8' custom Connley gaff. Trash can at the ready, game on. Got it swimming, gaff and into the can, just like we do for wahoo without the claws. We did video the whole encounter but PETA would be all over it if posted.

Doesn't really taste like wahoo, similar to chicken but more like Redtail Hawk or osprey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove iguanas from my property?

Green iguanas are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty laws and can be humanely killed on private property year-round with landowner permission. The FWC encourages removal of green iguanas from private properties by landowners. Members of the public may also remove and kill iguanas from 22 FWC managed public lands without a license or permit under Executive Order 17-11. Captured iguanas cannot be relocated and released at other locations in Florida. Homeowners that trap iguanas on their property may be able to obtain euthanasia services from local exotic veterinarians, humane societies or animal control offices depending on the location and availability of services. If you are not capable of safely removing iguanas from your property, please seek assistance from a professional nuisance wildlife trapper.

So it stayed still while you held a pipe to it's nose? You should have just charmed it right out of the pool and had it gaff itself.

humanely killed? What does that mean? If you want them gone you want them gone. It’s like war with rules ....... makes no sense to me.

It was laying on the bottom, hiding. I had been using a 10' piece of pvc to spot clean some stains, so the set up was already there. Just moved slowly and put the pvc 2-3" directly in front of him. Poured in the mixture and he went to sleep for 5 minutes. would have use a different chemical in hindsight.

Problem I see here is that I wouldn't want to swim in anything that kills an iguana.

Put a Contender in that pool with the iguana and gaff him out of it and you'd win the Internet.
