Default Why I can't wait for Amazon to take over

TL;DR: Lowe's sucks because the idiots that work there don't know what hardware is or how to ring it up. I can't wait for Amazon and/or robots to replace them completely.

Gather round the campfire boys and girls, so I can tell you a story that would make RussH blush...of why Lowe's and similar suck, and why I'm ok with Amazon doing their best to run them out of town.

This weekend's project is slated to be building some standards for a 20' gooseneck equipment trailer, such that it can haul some dirtbikes. A quick scan of my material on hand shows that I've got enough lumber, just need some hardware. Wanting to get a head start on the project, I leave the house about 4:15 with my handy dandy notebook listing exactly what I need. The plan is to go into Lowe's, swing by hardware to pick up what I need and nothing more, and get home before 5 to have a solid hour and a half to work on it this evening.

Whip the Ferd F-Eleventy into Lowe's and head straight to the hardware section, but not without taking a lap through tool world and drooling over some toolboxes. To my surprise, the hardware was well organized, and they had enough qty on hand of everything I need (some lag bolts, some carriage bolts, washers, and nuts...all in the 3/8" galvanized variety). I wrote all the Item #s and qty down on the little baggie just like they want you to, and zipped over to the truck section to grab a spare high pressure gauge. And that's where the mission went all to hell.

A quick survey of the checkout options revealed that the ONE line they had open was backed way up, so I moseyed over to self checkout. This proved to be a grave mistake. I scanned the tire gauge and then looked for the button to enter item #. No dice...apparently not an option for self checkout. No prob-llama, I'll just summon some help. She waddles over and this is where things go completely off the rails. So I says to her:

I've already scanned the tire gauge, just need to enter the items in the bag. I've written Item # and quantity on the front

"Hmmm...ok"

She starts pressing random buttons and enters the first item on the bag. Gives her an error, she hits cancel and hits qty 8, somehow changing the qty of tire gauge (which I've already scanned) to 8. So I says:

That's not right...only one tire gauge, the 8 is for the first item listed on the bag

(Points to bag) "No it says right here 8"

Yes but that's for hardware. Look at the screen, it says qty 8 for the tire gauge

"Right, that's what you have written down"

At this point I'm getting mildly annoyed. I ask to to just void everything and we'll start over. She does. So now she starts with the numbers on the bag which are confusing the hell out of her because she can't comprehend that all the freak she needs to do is enter item #, followed by quantity which I've conveniently labeled clearly. Finally I convince her to just try it. She promptly enters the wrong number ringing up 8 table saws, somehow. total is something like $4,000. So I says:

That's not right...this is all hardware

(looks confused at screen) "Is this not what you have...table saw right?"

Alright now I'm getting pissed, so I says

Do you SEE any table saws?!?! The bag is full of hardware. That's it. Can we just void this and I'll go to a normal register?

"Ok yeah, I can't do hardware over here. Didn't know that's what this was. These numbers are all wrong. Whoever wrote them didn't know what they were doing"

I'm pretty dumbfounded by this comment. How do you work at a HARDWARE STORE and not be able to identify a FREAKING BAG OF HARDWARE!?!? Maybe it was her first day. Hell if I know. I didn't even bother to mention that I had written them as I'd done 1,000 times prior. So I walk over to the ONE register that was open and the line is 8 deep and I can tell they're having issues. At this point I consider throwing everything on the floor and walking out, but I really don't want to have to make a run in the morning. So about 15 minutes later and I finally get up there. I throws the hardware (and tire gauge) down at the register and she promptly says "Oh, I don't know how to do this. I have to call someone".

?!?!?!?!?! Whatever. Up walks this dude with a gnarly beard and I shit you not...2" pink bedazzled nails. This made sorting the hardware (which you'll soon see was necessary) very difficult because he couldn't pick up the washers with his nails. I would like to explore this a bit more, but that's not for this post.

Anyway so he promptly dumps everything out and starts sorting. I'm thinking "what in the ACTUAL EFF is going on here?!?!?!" He says "the item number doesn't work, I always just use what's stamped on the pieces" So he proceeds to sort and count everything, one at a time, and enter it all in. Note this was the VERY FREAKING POINT of having the hardware bags, a sharpie, and a handy dandy freaking place to write both ITEM NUMBER and QUANTITY.

50 minutes later and I had finally been rung up. What should have taken literally 10 minutes turned into almost an hour, and by the time I got home I was so frustrated I didn't bother working on it...just poured two Octoberfests into a giant stein and proceeded to medicate. It's this crap that's the reason I've quit going to Lowe's in all but very rare situations. And let's not talk about how they don't stock freaking D-rings anymore. A hardware store. That doesn't have D-rings.

But you know who does? Amazon.

I've you've made it this far I hope you've enjoyed it. I don't know if customer service is so poor because people have left and started using Amazon, or people have started using Amazon because it's so poor. But either way...death to big box stores.

OH! And since it was now too late to work on stuff this evening, I went to the other Lowe's (foods) because I noted we were dangerously low on bacon, and I wanted to grab some supplies for a sweet potato hash tomorrow morning, namely some Johnston County sweet potatoes. Girl at the register asked me what they were. I looked at her confuzzled and said with an upwards inflection "sweet potatoes?"

Robots can't get here soon enough.

Phew! I feel better now. And the beer is working.

Idiots at Lowe's don't know what hardware is, or really anything for that matter.

In my defense it didn't look like that long of a story when I wrote it on my 27" monitor.

I read the whole thing and I feel your pain, word of advice though...if you need hardware only nuts washer bolts etc always go to Ace. In my experience the people at ace are far more helpful and understanding of how that process works.
Iím not only speaking for my local ones but genuinely everywhere I go they get it.
8 @ .89
4 @ .35 etc

I would have walked out for sure

You are 110% right about ACE...never been in a bad one and that's generally where I tend to go for this sort of thing. Unfortunately ours would have been closed by the time I got over there. Their hours make it difficult, but they are fantastic.

We have a small family owned Ace here. The girl who runs it probably knows more about tools and hardware than most on this forum. Hardware section is off limits to customers. They have a little counter in the back. Tell them what you need and they get it. Never a line, never have to wait. They know most people by name who come in.

The only thing going for Lowe's is convenience. I haven't been in at least 6 months but figured this was straightforward enough that it wouldn't be an issue.

It's the store for the unwashed masses. Agree completely Ace is infinitely better.

Been down that road plenty of times. Usually you can't find the pen to write the numbers on the little bag because some dumb%$$ stole it. Now I make it real simple for them. I gather my hardware and take a photo of the labels and when I get to the front I show it to the cashier and tell them how many I have. Heaven forbid they have to open their little book and try to match it up.

I'll wait for the resident idiots to start complaining about people who complain. Oh wait. They only do that if they don't agree with you. LOL.

OP: Yup. That's why I go to those stores as a last resort.
