Default Caulking a Bathroom

Getting ready to caulk a bathroom as we just installed a new tub enclosure.

Any tips or suggestions how to make my caulk job neat? I have caulked in the past, but honestly it looks like crap, but works. Also any brands that work best. I need to caulk along the tub and the new tub enclosure.

Painters tape off the edges. That’s how you get nice clean edges. You can also use one of those tools, but your finger works just fine.

If you tape the edge do sections at a time, depending on the cure time it can start setting up before pulling tape and will leave a jagged edge.

FILL THE TUB WITH WATER. Not full but half-way anyway, otherwise when you do, after time, it could separate the caulk. Finger works, keep it wet with saliva. That's my DIY advice.

Latex caulk- have a small bucket of water and tshirt rag handy.
Silicone caulk have some mineral spirits and paper towels handy.

cut the tip at an angle carefully and not big.

put in a small steady bead and knock it off one time per 2-4 ft section, wiping your finger regularly to keep it clean and wet.

A wet finger will help shape a smooth bead

use caulk edging tool to get smooth seam, keep tool moistened as needed with clean water
I never use a finger to form the bead because I found your hand contains bacteria that will get into the caulk and can cause it to discolor as the bacteria grows from the inside of the caulk.
Never ever use spit on your finger as this is certain to turn the silicone caulk to turn brown/black in short order.

Don't use silicon caulk. A good grade of latex caulk is fine.

go buy NP-1 , its a one part urethane caulk, its what roofers use, elastomeric, comes in colors and will last forever, its the 5200 of bath caulk, tape off the edges then use a caulking tool., no bacterial growth and will never separate from one surface (like silicone ) or dry out and crack (like latex )

Run your bead of caulk then spray the joint with a foaming glass cleaner. Then tool it with your finger. The caulk will only adhere to where it’s placed. the glass cleaner prevents the caulk from sticking to the tile or glass when it spreads out when you run over it with your finger. Learned this from a shower glass installer.

Clean all the surfaces with plenty of Isopropyl alcohol to kill any mold spores. Even if it's new.

Don’t use a 99 cent caulking gun. A decent gun, still under $10, will make you look like a pro.

Fill the tub with water, when you caulk. If there's any flexing you will have a better seal.

Can you use that on the boat where the console meets the deck?

Or do you use a simple good quality acrylic caulk and redo it every couple years?

It is a PITA pulling up that old caulk then getting it clean and laying down the new. The damn mold growth starts about 3 months later. I have done it about 5 times and it is my least favorite maintenance item to complete. Looking for a longer term fix this time...unless you would like to do it for me as a surprise. You know where the boat is..

5200 and masking tape. Mine still looks good 15 years later.

This.
NP-1 is the best and it's only a couple bucks more per tube.

X2

Blue tape, calk, then use tool or finger for excess and then remove tape.

Yep. I just spit on finger and push it down firm. Use other finger to get any extra. Isn't really difficult
