Default Labrador vs Golden Retriever

My wife and I are looking to add a second dog. We currently have a 5.5 year old beagle/shepherd mix. We were set on adding a female golden retriever and the liter was just born. However we are now unsure if we should get a lab or golden. My wife had a golden growing up and always said they're the best dog. However we are concern that the dog is going to be too hot with the heavy fur in south Florida. Dogs sleep in the house and the yard is only for bathroom and playing. I know they are both heavy shedders and our dog now sheds so that is no concern. I know you can't go wrong with either but for those that have Goldens now do they fair in Florida summers when playing outside? You shave them? My wife's family use to shave the pooch for warmer months. Thoughts on deciding between the two? Thank you.

I had a golden we rescued in 1990....his name was Bayfield....he was from Colorado....his owner a cop moved here and couldn't keep him in his new townhome....so my Dad brought him home...( Can remember it like yesterday )...
put him on a leash and said this could be your new dog...he was about 3 years old....I took the leash and let him goin the backyard.
My dad panicked...
" It's not our dog!! This is just a test "
Me " hey Bay...hey Beau....come here boy "
From 20 yards or so away.....he came right to and sat by my side.....
Me " here's the leash....return it he is ours now "
Damn onions.......
Greatest dog ever....
When we moved to California I sent a shirt I slept in and called him when it arrived....my mom put the phone on speaker and let him smell the shirt while I spoke to him....she said he was going nuts....flew him out by himself to Cali...git him out of his crate and the son of bitch sniffed me once jumped on me and took a piss and poop and we were off!!!!
Several years in California and we drove back cross country.
Few years later he had a stroke.....he is buried right by the front door with a stone and plaque......
The Patriots were playing the Chiefs that day....3 cars went down to pick him up....I still had funeral window stickers from my great Uncles passing....so he got a funeral and watched the game with us......
We buried him after the game.....there was 12 of us....not a dry eye....

Long and short of it.....I vote a golden...hope yours is as good as mine!

I vote lab, but I am bias. I would also look for good breeding and litters that have certain characteristics. Not all dogs are equal. I have a great lab that is around 55 lbs and sheds VERY little. Less prone to health/joint issues. While I have had all different sizes and colors, there is a reason that hunt tests and other competitions are predominately black labs.

Goldens are great dogs as well for sure, I am just drawn to labs after have my fair share through the years.

Oh...as far as heat I would always give him a lion cut....he was big for his size...stood about 6' I gotta find the pic of he and I standing together...I'm 6'2" and was just about there at about 110lbs....very large for a golden with a huge head....I'll get the pics tomorrow... hopefully I can find them.

Had a black lab too.....great dogs.... 9 month chew monsters till they break in...be prepared.....they chew EVERYTHING

This is going to be like comparing apples and oranges but which ever one you decide on 12 to 14 years from now you will be saying,"that's the BEST dog I ever had".
P.S. I am partial to yellows labs cause, "That's the BEST dog I ever had.

Current guy...rescue...wishes you all the best!!!

currently greatest family member ever.....the girls picked him out and brought him home....the sent a video of him jumping vertically....which he still does now before walky time....he was 85lbs when we got him....last vet visit 135lbs.....rock solid!
I wake up to his bum or face pretty much every day...unless the grandmonsters are here....then it is all about them.
I said Kelly what kind of dog is that?
She gave me the longest technical veterinarian way of saying - it's a pitbull mix jerkoff
He is half pit and mastiff.
Never ever wanted a pit....his owners couldn't keep him....he was raised right now here 3 years and going....I cannot wait to see him and walk him every day....we had to put down our wolf mix....then we got him....It was very difficult putting him down....he grew up with the girls 17 years....I think Red rescued us!!!
Consider a rescue.
I'm a blabber mouth today......best of luck with either breed....fuk it!!! Get both!!!!
pats to the existing guy....hell be excited with a new budy or 2

I've had Golden's for years. With that said My current golden has more hair than some of the previous ones and she
wants to be outside but has trouble with the heat. She'll lay in her pool and can handle it or she wants inside for the A/C.
Cool mornings are her favorites.

well said .

I think there's 6 Goldens in the family now and another 5 or 6 that has moved on . Growing up for me was a 100 lb dark uncut male with papers - curly hair on neck , a real handful (lived 12 yrs) . I don't have one now though each cousin and aunt/uncle has 2 (6) . Another fav was a dk red 90 lb female in FL . Hung out in boat shops - she would go to the roach coach lady and get her hard boiled egg , riverside restaurants - if I was on the boat so was she . Only 90 lb dog I ever saw that would stand on the gunwale , also a tennis ball fetching machine par excellence . The breeded my uncle is using seems to produce dogs that last 8 - 10 yrs .

I’ve had both. IMO Golden’s have a better temperament for being pets. Labs are hands down better retrievers.

Golden's are no brainers temperament wise once you get them trained . They pretty much go find the nearest kid to play with .

Listen to the wife. I've had a golden retriever or another for over 30 years. My daughter now has one. Labs are just as nice. Goldens shed and some have hip disease but if you can put up with the shedding you will be paid back manyfold.
