I went the pergola route just this summer over two decks on my summer digs. Plan initially started out was to put up the sails. I learned that you really need more than one to do a given area, need two at least to truly get coverage, or shade. In my case, the supports/poles locations were an issue (one would've been in a tree line, the other my driveway). If I were doing the 'sail' style, I wouldn't even consider a solid fabric like Sunbrella, I would go with shade cloth. Let the water run through it, let some of the energy from the wind bleed off. Replacement is cheap, go on ebay, several manufacturers there will make you anything you want with great feedback.

Have you looked at metal roofing material? ~27¢/inch yes/inch. A 10’ x 36” wide section is $32.40.

would not fit into the design scheme. I already have a screened in under roof deck but am adding (eventually) an outdoor living area with fireplace, pavers, etc in the back corner of my property (relatively small property in a coastal neighborhood). Want the ability to be in the sun if we want or to draw the sunshade, also providing privacy if we want as the closest neighbor also has a second floor deck looking down into the area. Liked the idea of also having rain protection but will likely go with a sunscreen only.
