I think a lot of the concern with the "original owner" thing is due to the numerous flood damaged cars out there.
Way too many cars got totaled out by the insurance, and the auction house buyers put a new wiring harness on it, and hope that all other electrical systems run long enough to drive a few miles before needing extensive service work.

A clean pedigree is important to some buyers.

They are asking because they don't want to buy from some pseudo used car dealer that is flipping cars he finds from Craigslist.

Not a bad way to make a buck, I used to do it.

My my response was, No I am not the original owner, I buy and sell a dozen select cars a year and I only deal with cream puffs. Come take a look at it and if you are looking for a clean, safe, and competivaly priced car this is the one for you. I have no problem having you get the car inspected by your mechanic.
what time would you like to see the car?

Well, I sold it today. Guy never even asked if I was first owner. Made me a low-ball offer on phone, and I said OK, if we do it right now. He showed up, drove around block and handed me the cash. $2,800. I gave gas station owner $100. He was the first and only person to meet me in person and drive it after it sat on busy corner for a month and on CL for a month. Started at 4500, dropped to 3900, then to 3500 asking price.

i inquire as to ownership history on vehicles and boats. i want to know if it was ever a fleet/rental. can also then ask for maintenance records and know when they should go back until. many reasons to ask.

Alternative view for consideration

Scammers phishing for older people with money - looking for one owner 20 year old Caddies/Buicks/whatever

From an online perspective the percentages of an older seller biting on all the different payment scams & so on gives them a juicy shopping list of potential victims

A 20 year old Caddie with 6 owners tells me the current owner is not wealthy (probably)

A 20 year old Caddie with one owner suggest that they have the financial means and are probably older - hence possible victim + other potential ruses as well

Anything is possible

Rather buy from original owner in most cases as they have a better history with the item that is for sale.

Means a whole lot to me.

I'm selling a 2010 Camry on Letgo, and I got the same line of questioning. I get the impression from the inquisitor that English is a second language. I was waiting for him to tell me he was sending me a check in excess of the value, and to mail him back the remainder in Google Play cards.

I resent that remark. 86/87 GLHS Omni/chargers are worth 10-15k. 89 Shelby CSX VNT are worth around 10k. 87 Shelby Lancers (like mine) are worth 6-8k. All K car based. Even a clean low mile aries/reliant k car is worth a decent amount. They are very light so they scoot with a turbo.
