Default My sons after graduation road trip

Graduated last week from HS and left Sunday for a three week drive across country (well most of the country), with planned stops to see local friends visiting family on their route. Having a great time, loved Kansas. Stayed in a barn last night at the edge of some little town. Gods country.

Got to Denver this am and were heading to one of their contacts places today. Half hour ago phone rings, their truck is totaled (Actually his friends dads truck) and one of the three was knocked unconscious but was awake. Stopped at a red light and rear ended. other car never even attempted to brake. Cops were just arriving.

well the trip the three have been looking forward to and planned since the holidays is over, one kid hurt but will be OK and a totaled truck now stuck with no ride. Life's a bitch.

Feel bad for the kids.

Rental car and continue on, if able.

Today I saw a brand new Subaru smashed squarely in the rear, by US Mail contract carrier truck. Driver of truck tried to run but was forced of the highway by another truck driver.

Ill see what he wants to do. The parents of the boy who was injured texted me 15 minutes after I spoke with them to tell me they were ready to book three flights back for the AM. I told them to hold until I spoke with Jayden. I suspect if my son want to stay on he will be solo. Also tough for 18 YO to rent cars but I'm sure we could find something.

Kind of a trip of a life time.... provided injuries arenít an issue. I would encourage them to continue on.

Renting at 18 can be done, but itís not expensive, I see it as a problem for the insurance company of the person that hit them. Surely this is not the first time someone has hit an 18 year old and they required a rental car.

Glad everyone is ok.

As suspected, the offending driver (in his work vehicle) "dropped his phone" aka the prick was texting.

They are staying at a hotel near the hospital where his friend is being treated and will figure out what they are going to do as a group.

Could be worse. My dad died of brain cancer last week. My friend's son is currently missing after a kayaking accident in the Merrimack River in Concord, NH this morning and I just got summonsed to jury duty today. Life is a bitch, but someone always has it worse.

Sorry about the first two.

Personally, I am very happy to serve on Jury duty, it is part of our responsibility as Americans.

Solo is not a good plan, especially for an 18 year old who probably has very little experience driving long distances solo. The boredom can lead to inattention and that is bad.
No reason not to continue, and I am pretty sure rental car agencies have to rent to people 18 and over - it just costs more.

I agree that solo is a bad idea for an 18 year old. Can you fly out and join him if his buddies leave?

Same. Adapting to unforeseen circumstances and moving on with your plan (or something close to it) is a great life experience.

They are flying back tomorrow. His friend who was driving got 40 stitches on his face and they lost the desire to push on. They were all pretty shook up.

He would not have gone solo. Point was if he wanted to push on it would have been solo which is a non starter. They started the trip together and are ending it together.

Fortunately no major injuries and they are still whole. The one bright side is he now knows first hand about distracted driving and how dangerous his motorcycle really can be.

This thread demonstrates how the best of times can possibly be the worst of times at the drop of a hat. (or a phone)

I went high school with 2 guys that rode their bikes out to California to see the Pacific ocean the day after graduation. Neither of them had ever really been anywhere except Myrtle Beach and were so excited. It took them however many days but they finally arrived. They parked their bikes and walked down to the beach, shucked off their shoes and waded in, happy as heck to see the ocean and to have arrived worn out but safe. Imagine their disappointment when they walked back to find both of their bikes gone...……………...stolen. Neither one of them came from families with money so flying back was out of the question. They got enough money to ride the bus back. They'll always have that story to tell.

Luckily none of the boys were badly hurt and they'll always have a story to tell.

For his 1995 graduation trip, my son and two friends took my Suburban and bay boat from East Tennessee to Grand Isle. Fished and had a blast. Made a trip to New Orleans, but no police report, so all was good. They still talk about the fun they had.
