Default Brokerage house returns in last year

I want to retire. Everyday it seems a little further out than what was sold to me. I have a couple of the bigs that will sell you a return figure to get you on board and then when it does not happen you get the last forty years average speech.
I feel the money goes in it is then put in to the big pot. Instead of carefully watching it the Broker is off to to the Golf course to hook up more idiots like me . No sense of urgency when the markets dive to get you into a safe position. I have done better myself than my paid help by double digits.
What current returns are others seeing? Am I the only one shouldering this issue?

My comment, you don’t get in a safe position when the markets dive.
Just because you have a broker, doesn’t mean you have no responsibility in how your money is invested.

If you are invested in individual companies you better be thinking like a business owner, not a stock holder.
In addition, way to many people focus on “markets”.( conventional wisdom)
Have you compared your long term results to the S&P TR or the DJIA TR?

When markets dive, you don’t run for cover, it’s too late.

And if you do run for cover, how do know when to get back in. Look at 4Q last year and 1Q this year, would you have got back in? You‘ll NEVER win by chasing the market.

Diversify, plain and simple.

Lots of ways to under perform the market. The easiest way is to pay high fees.
