Default People that drive up closed lane to get to the front.

There is probably nothing that bugs me more than the inconsiderate pricks that drive up the lane that is closed ahead instead of waiting in line. Not only is it rude but it delays everyone else in line because of the jerk offs then stop traffic by trying to squeeze into the open lane. I don't know why there is always some putz that will let them in ahead of everyone. Today for the first time nobody let 2 vehicles in until a semi left enough room for them to get in. One of them came flying past me going at least 60MPH while the lane I am in is stop and go. He thought he was going to squeeze in at the very front of the line but he ran into a couple of orange barrels to avoid hitting the stopped vehicles. I gave him the 1 fingered salute when I went by along with most everyone else.

You mean the zipper merge? It's the legal and correct way for traffic to flow. Here is Ohio's version...

Actually, most of the time, you are supposed to merge at the merge point and alternate. We have a cop that parks at the merge point and tickets those jack-holes that feel they need to straddle two lanes to keep people from driving up to the merge point.

Russ,

You are mad at people doing it correctly.

OP you are in the wrong, the zipper at the merge point is the fastest and safest method. It's how the majority of Europe does this and they play well with each other. Here in America, so many people have this "me first" attitude that it will never work, sadly.

Sorry Russ,
the zipper method is the law and it is described by the merge point where the lane ends and alternating vehicles.

If you want to merge early that is up to you. Here in VA it works pretty well

The last thing I want to do is get heated over other drives. If you need to be in front of me, then go ahead. I rather the idiot is in front then behind me.

I white line the phuckers and snug up to the vehicle in front of me.

I was going to say the same thing but all the replies beat me to it-- Russ traffic engineers WANT YOU to use as much of the useable highway real estate as possible-- it is good for everyone. Secondly the people that merge early (AKA RUSS) actually slow the process down and cause bigger back-ups and delays for everyone with random merges happening and people in the middle lane having to deal with multiple merges instead of one. Everyone-- please go to the end and zipper merge at the end-- dont try and be "polite" by merging early--- you are only causing more delays.

In FL it’s not the zipper merge with merging lanes it’s the freeway exits that get backed up a mile, which then backs up the entire interstate from of all the Ppl who decide to drive slowly in the middle lane waiting for their opportunity to cut in line up front.

The exit for the veterans/airport coming into Tampa from St Pete is the worst with everyone acting like they are getting off Westshore/Kennedy exit then nosing in right at the end.

That's fine, I'll just pull in behind and chuckle about all the people that didn't follow the law and merged a mile early...

I don't think it's the law, or even promoted in some states. Don't get me wrong, I think it should be both.

I disagree totally. The zipper mere slows everything down. NY is the prime example of how bad driving slows everything down. VA comes next.

In case you see a large boat stopping you from getting in the closed lane, it's probably me. I'm happy to fight anyone over this.

So exactly how does not allowing vehicles to merge and not using the available lane help the flow?

If someone is willing to fight over whether you are 3 spaces behind or ahead you should be using mass transit

its not debatable. The zipper merge is the most efficient way. Your ego might not like it- but thatís the fact. Itís like queuing formulas- might not make sense to some people but itís proven mathematically

I recently saw a sign that specifically told drivers to use both lanes and merge at the lane closure.

Not true. The nice guys in the open lane are not supposed to have to slow down to let someone in, which is what happens in your solution. If all you have to watch for is the vehicle in front of you, the traffic goes faster and safer. Haven't you wondered why there are so few in the closed lane? It the a-hole to nice guy ratio.
