Anywhere in the port is pretty good but the bars and restaurants get pretty packed so get there early. Traffic is usually ridiculous around the port and up around US1 in Titusville.

Across from Titusville High is "birdwatcher park". Has nothing to do with ducks and geese..a "bird" is a missle, and birdwatcher park is directly across from launch complex 39..the saturn pads.

By land:
The 528 Beach Line causeway near the Banana River bridge just west of the locks and Port Canaveral is great. You can see the rocket sitting on the pad from there. It gets pretty busy on launch days.

By water:
The Banana River just north and west of the locks is a great location. There is a good boat ramp at nearby Kelly park but I imagine it gets pretty busy on launch days too.

Shuttle Discovery Launch 4th of July 2006 taken from my boat just and west of the locks on the Banana River:

I’ve always wanted to watch one too. I guess there is a schedule online somewhere?

The local newspaper for the Space Coast has good launch info on their "Space" page:

The launch experience has a direct correlation with the amount of bullshit you are willing to deal with. You want the best experience? I believe you can pay for tickets and get as close as a civilian will be allowed. Something like 2 miles on KSC property.

Want free? Prepare to arrive 6+ hours ahead of the launch and then hope it isn't scrubbed. Traffic leaving will be the equivalent to the third level of hell. Certain areas in Titusville and Port Canaveral fall in to this level.

Little farther away, second level of hell?? Hit up Cocoa Beach pier or the beaches near by. The launch area juts out in to the ocean and that area has some amazing views. Traffic and parking can still make you want to kick a puppy.

If you're going to make a trip of it, I highly suggest you choose a night launch. Much more dramatic!
