You could be 100 laps behind and be in last place no matter who you pass.

Or, if you ain't first, you're last.

For the record, could we get your sons answer, phrased exactly as written?

I am confused not about the question but as to what side of the argument the op is on?

If teacher said 2nd place, youre just being a pain in the ass.

If she gave the not enough info to determine answer, then shes earlier being a pain in the ass or maybe she was teaching a lesson about thinking outside the box in which case i think thats a good thing provided she taught the kids the idea before asking them the question.

Kind of agreeing with ^^ this ^^.

Start from the beginning. What was the question, what was you're kid's answer, what was the grade on the answer, and what is the debate?

There's always math.

My 3rd grade math teacher told me so, and prepared me for this day.

You said “too stupid to be a teacher” to someone’s face?
I wouldve bitch slapped you for the pompous ass you are had you said that to my mother or two aunts that are teachers. Why don’t you join old Pete and take your super smart kids out of the system and home school?

Before you pass the second place guy, you're in third place, not 2A. You're in second after you pass the second place person, and they fall to third place.

I assume that your kids answer was first place?

Given what the op has posted the real winner is the teacher since they will not have to deal with irrational parents for a couple of months.

Teacher was right, no logic needed
Called her stupid to her face?

Assuming the race would involve a high school track team event If you really want to get into this it depends on how long the race distance was and how early in the event the passing took place. If a 100 yard dash (run on a straight track) you would move into second place. A 220 dash run on a curve with a staggered starting line you could pass the second place runner early in the race and if that runner were in an outer lane from yours you would still be in third place (assuming no other runners change their position at the same time), If the event were an 880 or a mile, you could have been lapped by the second place runner and then passed the second place runner after being lapped and still remain in your current position which could range anywhere from third place to last place.
Happy now?

Why are we even talking about being in second place?

question - If you were in a race and passed the person in second place, what place would you be in?

Sonís answer - not enough information to determine an answer.

Teachers answer - second place

son disagreed and told her that her answer was wrong. She told him no he was wrong.

Was originally called because she said he was disrespectful. I told her he had every right to defend his answer, especially when he is right.
