Default Huge house cat problem! Any advice appreciated.

We inherited cat about 7 years old. He has always been a house cat and he is very nice and friendly as cats go. He will pee in the cat box but he only poops in the floor usually about three times a day he will never ever poop in the cat box yeah like I say he will pee in it every time. I don't get it. Any ideas to teach this cat to poop in the cat box? We have literally trapped him in a room no bigger than the cat box and he still poops on the floor 1 inch away from the cat box. I'm losing my mind. No we can't get rid of the cat that is not an option.

Maybe two litter boxes?

We have two indoor cats, their litter boxes are I. The garage with a cat door to get to them (we lock them out at night and when we’re gone). They pee in one and poop in the other.

Anyhow, that sucks. We’ve had lots of cats over the years but never had that problem.

Default Our cat does this sometimes as well

Usually when litter box hasn't been cleaned. Try changing the litter brand. My daughter is in charge of her cat and uses a crystal like no clumping. Product. That seems to cure the issue for now until the female cat changes her mind

Never had that problem but Ive been told cat's don't like to use dirty litter boxes. If that cat pees before it poops try cleaning the box inbetween the two. Make sure there isn't any scent left on the floor and if your not using clumping litter give it a try. Putting the poop in the box was another good suggestion, also is the box big enough?
