LE involved in crash writes trucker.

Actually want the LEOs views on this one. Cop was doing those slow down back and forth across the interstate, left the road, crossed a solid white line, naturally everyone thought he had left the HWY, traffic started to move. Cop decides he is not finished yet didn't look ran right into the side of a truck. , Tractor trailer nails him.
There is a video of it. Cop wrote the driver but you guys look at the video let me know your views.

Trucker did nothing wrong. He stayed in his land and did not swerve. Cop was in the wrong as he veered over and crossed a few lanes of traffic unexpectedly.

I would have to see the 30 seconds to minute of video leading up to that clip to make a determination. Could go either way based on that....

Lights or no, the cop should have made some effort to avoid a crash. I’m saying it’s on the cop. Trucks don’t exactly stop on a dime.

SeaCat22 05-23-2019 06:54 PM

Gonna take that one to Judge Judy.

Insider 05-23-2019 06:58 PM

looked to me like the cop went over to slow down the cars coming on the entrance ramp and the truck probably should have been going a bit slower still

I agree

I will also say from the video that looks like A LOT of lanes to use one vehicle to do a rolling road block.. He should have kept weaving...It does look like he was concentrating on the red vehicle.to get it to slow down. I ALWAYS HATED DOING ROLLING ROAD BLOCKS because of this exact example.

I think I'm with the trucker on this one, especially if you watch the in-cab camera angle.

Sure looked like for some reason he was after the red car and trying to stop him. Once they were stopped I wouldn't have expected the cop to dart back out into traffic.

I'd also want to know what was going on down the road to cause the cop to think he need to do the "slow-down maneuver in which the vehicle, with emergency lights and siren on, zigzags across all lanes of traffic in order to slow people down. "

Cracker 05-23-2019 07:07 PM

^^^^ It is done all the time due to various construction issues

nautiduck 05-23-2019 07:17 PM

I havent watched the video yet but I ha e one question. Were his emergency lights still on? If so trucks at fault. Cutting lanes as you described is telling traffic to stay behind him. If he wanted them to pass he would have turned off his lights.

nautiduck 05-23-2019 07:19 PM

Watched the video. Trucker is at fault. It was obvious the officer was going over to slow the red car. Trucker is an idiot.

Twahl 05-23-2019 07:20 PM

Technically the Trooper is at fault, but being at fault for the wreck and a traffic violation by the trucker are two different things. The trooper no matter what has to ensure he's merging safely, I'll bet he was still watching the red car to make sure it wasn't trying to pass again. However the other vehicles should have still slowed and stayed behind the trooper with his lights and siren going. The trucker is going to lose it. Utah law states you can't pass an emergency vehicle with is lights and sirens on.

Umm gee I dont know maybe a major pileup. Or who knows maybe some kid got on the highway and theyre trying to stop traffic so he doesnt get killed. How stupid does someone have to be to not understand the officer wants you to stay behind him? Also why does it matter why? If a cop has his lights on you yield. Period. You dont need to know why. God I swear the American public has just gotten stupid.

autobaun70 05-23-2019 07:28 PM

No excuse for crossing a solid line at that angle and speed by the LEO. Leo should have decided if he was doing a slow down maneuver for the traffic lanes, or for the on ramp. Both simultaneously was not practical given the number of lanes.

Wow. What an idiot. That cop has no business being behind the wheel of any vehicle. Lucky he didn't kill somebody.

KJS 05-23-2019 07:37 PM

That's just plain stupid on the LEO's part. You cant swerve into a truck like that and expect him to stop on a dime. The comply or die mentality doesn't over rule the law of physics.

Correct but he went completely off the road. When a trooper is on the traveled part of the HWY all cars are suppose to stay behind him. when he leaves the traveled part of the HWY has he not cleared traffic to continue. If he does leave the road completely is he not libel for his own actions merging back into HWY traffic. I"m not for or agents just wanted you guys views.

Regardless of who was "at fault" trucker was clearly trying to pass the police cruiser in the adjacent lane with its lights on. This accident was entirely avoidable had the trucker simply taken time to consider what was going on - probably not his first encounter with a rolling road block. Exercising your "right of way" doesn't always mean you are doing the right thing. LE was probably assuming other vehicles on the road knew what he was doing as well. It seems that no one was seriously injured which is a good thing, but both drivers share culpability for this mess. Just like in an argument sometimes one person is right and one is wrong. And sometimes both are wrong.
