Default 10k not far off, how long until.....

Serious question, I've read where they were able to move an atom. We probably all have 4k phone service with 5k right around the corner, they say 10k is 10X's faster than 4k. How long until they can actually beam someone up?

I think you're confusing 4K, which is a video resolution, with 4G, which is a (sort of) cellular speed measurement.

Seems like you might have already been a bit "beamed up" tonight.
bigjohnnc and back at it like this.

It will take a few years to roll out true 5G. Currently AT&T has 5G Edge which is not true 5G but 4G with better compression and Verizon has started to deploy true 5G in larger markets.

5G is 1Gbps where as 4G is 100Mbps making 5G 100 times faster than 4G. Keep in mind that is how fast data can move over the airwaves. How fast your device or whatever the antenna connects to at the other side is another story so it’s doubtful that anyone will see true 5G speeds any time soon. My 5G Edge phone only sees about 50Mbps and we all know the telcos start to throttle you when you use a lot of data.

I think the more more interesting thing is that 5G has the potential to replace all of the hard wire cable and telco infrastructure which puts the cell carriers in a position to make the cable companies obsolete in what I would guess is a decade. Soon your cable modem from Comcast will be replaced with a wireless hot spot from Verizon, I know people already doing this, take into consideration streaming services and the cable companies value proposition starts to erode fast. Also most people hate their cable company and would be more than happy to dump them if they could.

Dump cable fees, pick up phone fees for your tv, matters little

Think I'll skip pronouns with people I don't know and just say "dude".

Att has been working on getting rid of land line for a while now. Bright house or spectrum has a phone service offer but I believe it's a verizon network. I think the major carriers will migrate to cell providers in the near future but att and verizon will dominate the market at first.

maybe I'm wrong but being the first to make a start usually puts you in the lead. Sprint was always a day late and a dollar short by never really finishing a "new" network before unrolling another only to start back at square one.
