Default IRS Wait Times

On hold with the IRS to resolve an issue from several years ago. Current wait time is 30-90 minutes. Currently at 37:40 and still holding.

What sucks is the person you get probably won't know as much as you.

I know your pain as well. I was audited for a foreign tax exemption from 2012. This was 2016 and the office I was dealing with was in Puerto Rico. I could not understand the lady that was assigned to my case. It went on for over a year. Every time I would give them what that wanted they would ask for something else. Just keep asking until they find something you cannot come up with. I held it together until my company told me due to their tax team doing my taxes any judgement against me they would pay. My attitude changed after that.

I lived in Brazil at the time. I flew from Brazil to Angola and worked in an office there. From time to time I would go out to one of our rigs. Apparently to the IRS once I flew out to the rig I was in international waters which counted as being in the USA. Total days was 2 days over what is allowed to claim the exemption on a portion of earnings. My company said they have never had that issue but wasn't worth fighting.

https://taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/contact-us

they'll actually call them for you... I guess they call themselves. " Tell them you can't sit on the phone that long.
  • You've tried repeatedly to contact the IRS but no one has responded, or the IRS hasn't responded by the date promised."

Just got disconnected when they transferred me to another department. Luckily they gave me the phone number for the next department This is a special kind of torture.

Sounds typical of all cable, internet and phone provider's. Maybe those TV shows of the hermits living in remote Alaska are really on to something.

My wife and I used to own an S Corp. whenever we had to call the IRS, we got the dept that only dealt with businesses. They were definitely a cut above the average IRS agent. I won't say it was a pleasure having to deal with them, but compared to dealing with the average taxpayer agent, yes it was.
I also understand they have another, even higher up dept that will only talk to CPA's and tax professionals.

Last time my wife had an issue with the IRS, it finally got to the point that Lindsey Graham, Mark Sanford and Tim Scott got letters from her. The matter was resolved in 2 weeks. All 3 responded, but whoever started working on it first was the one that went all the way through.

My CPA firm only deals with them by letter. My attorney recommended the same thing when we had a 1095C issue. Both said it will get directed to the correct person and not somebody you can get to by phone.

All that for them to tell me there's nothing they can do until I refile 2016 taxes.

I like the letter idea myself. At least you will have a paper trail back to the bad advice they gave you. A phone conversation is a love letter in the sand, gone as soon as you hang up. You would think that in the 21st century they would be doing all of this on Email

The IRS does not give a shit if they give you bad advise that cause you issues. Even if you can prove they gave poor advise they still hold the customer accountable.
