Watched the Deadwood movie - not that great. Just seemed way too focused on wrapping everything up neatly.

I tried to watch it. It was way too slow for me. I made it about 5 episodes and almost pulled the plug but felt I was invested and had to finish it. I'll never give it another second of my time.

Same with Narcos on netflix. Slow and just rode out the season. Horrible show

I typically do most of my netflixing on a small screen. I can see well enough without reading glasses to watch a movie or tv show on a small screen but I need cheaters to read subtitles. In general I like crime dramas and have a tried a few times to watch narcos but with all the subtitles just doesn’t work for me on the small screen.

It might have been “unrealistic” but I much prefer back in the day when movies or tv shows featured foreigners, they just had them speak English with a bad accent......

^ 100% agree and some major holes that were left open....how does Hearst, powerful murderer that he is, walk into a bar to confront his enemies with only two half-assed sheriffs by his side? and they simply back off when bullock stands up to them? Where's the rest of his posse? that didnt seem right to me. And Mrs Ellsworth takes off to find something to do with Charlie's land? And Dan is passed over for running the gem in favor of trixie? I guess there are choices to be made in a 2 hr finale with so many parallel stories.
for the record, i loved the show and have watched in prob 3 times end-to-end.

I enjoyed the Deadwood movie because it was like a flashback to watching the original series. Couple of things:

HBO has had GREAT series. Have enjoyed many of them, Sopranos as a fav, along with GOT. But there's a couple that never seem to get much mention, even though they were great watching. One of them being Six Feet Under (SFU). Another being Generation Kill, which I've gone back and watched at least twice. True Detective has been great overall, but the last season was very difficult to watch due to how much they constantly jumped around the space-time continuum of things. Still enjoyed it though. And if you watched Chernobyl, then I don't have to tell you that it's probably one of the best things HBO has ever produced. Won't be surprised at all if this doesn't garner lots of awards.

I'm looking forward to this in August. The Gemstones. Danny McBride and John Goodman? Oh hell ya!

I gotta ask, what's so great about The Wire? To each his own I guess but I'm into the 4th season and could just stop watching it now and not think about it again. Can't see how people think it's better than Deadwood or Sopranos or Band of Brothers or GoT . . . Like I said to each his own I guess

I semi binge watched The Wire over a few months. What I liked about the show was character development, gave the viewer a look at things from the view point of everyone, not just the main players/good guys and made me feel like I actually “knew” the players.

”Greatest show ever” probably not IMO but I personally thought it blew Deadwood out of the water. Deadwood for me had some ridiculously good “cussing” but wasn’t even close to being as good as The Wire or some of the other hbo shows you mentioned....

The beauty of The Wire lies in the characters, and also in the story as a whole, which uses the micro stage of Baltimore to show how The Game works on all levels, up to the macro (US Senate and beyond). They address in great detail social issues like public school system, drugs, police work, smuggling, justice system, political corruption, and all things that link them together. Shows with good character development are not fast paced, they are thorough and detailed and complex, and thus inherently slow. When I watch other shows like Justified for example, to me its like Nickleodeon in comparison

As for f bombs, there were some in The Wire:

True Detective was damn good too, complex and heavy.

I have to give GOT the edge then Sopranos.. Lots of great programming from HBO but what should you expect with a budget like theirs (How many subscribers? X $8 per month average).

Deadwood was good and the movie was decent. The one thing that gets me about Deadwood is that it seemed they tried too hard at tying Shakespeare and a Western (albeit historical) together.

Just watched the fight scene with dan and the captain.

Remembering That scene was more what got me to rewatch the show, this thread just reminded me about it. One of my favorite fight scenes of all time.

Hell On Wheels was a decent show but I thought the ending SUCKED. Mr Bohannon getting on a ship to chase a chick to China was about as lame as Ozzy Osborne aka “The Prince Of Darkness” playing the role of a clown on his $$ hungry wife’s tv show.
