If you have had skin cancer can you tell your story.

I do. Multiple Moh's surgeries....one in which I had to have extensive plastic surgery. Also had melanoma....which my wife caught(I have posted a pic.)

Have to go in for a skin check every 4 months.

Wife has had it. No pics.
Mostly on her back and shoulders. Has had several spots removed. One finally came back positive so they cut a larger area out.

She goes in every 3 months for a full dermo sight check.

All my planning was if something happened to me would the family be ok. Had to swing my thinking around to if something happens to her, is the family going to be Ok.
Strange way to think.

Melanoma in 2015. They cut half my neck off. Plastic surgeon did an excellent job and you can barely tell. So far so good!

Melanoma on my right shoulder about 13 years ago. No recurrence.

Grew up in Houston as a teen in the 70's got sunburned a lot out on a boat (duh!). So when she diagnosed it:

Doc: Did you ever blister when you got sunburned as a kid?
Me: yes
Doc: More than once?
Me: A month?
Doc: eyes roll

Her partner cut it out. Took a pretty good football of meat out around the cancerous mole. Before she took it out she asked me if it was OK with me if she played some music while she worked. I said "whatever helps you do your best work is great". So she cranked up the Led Zeppelin and got to work. Reports came back cancer was 'in situ" (confined to the site) which was very good news.

Visits every 6 months for 5 years, now once a year. No recurrence. Did I mention no recurrence? I'm thankful for that because melanoma is serious business.

Had 2 different types removed from neck, ears and cheeks. They had to cut pretty deep in a couple of areas but the plastic surgeons did an excellent job which doesn't really matter because I'm dirt dog ugly anyways.

Squamous cell on my left cheek (face..lol) last year. Tried the burn , no good. Had to go for the MOHS! Took two times of carving to get it all out. She connected the scar to a wrinkle and it looks fine. I have been using sun block and big hat when going in sun now! I think I have another one starting on my right cheek now

You nor I have time in the day to tell you about my skin cancer stories. Quick synopsis’s, melanoma on my back in 1998. Two nasty 6-8” scars running down my back. The treatments went well and surgery and have been cancer free (melanoma, the one that will kill you) since. I believe my dermatologist and her assistances have a pool every six months of how many spots will be removed. It was zero twice since 1998 and has been as high as five. I have seen my dermo every six months since 1998. My next appointment is June 18th and I know I have 3 more spots that have showed up since last appointment. It sucks but it beats the alternative.

Teach your kids today to wear clothes to protect them from the sun. Most sunscreens are just as bad as nothing at all. My skin damage is not what from what I am doing today, it is what I was doing when I was 20. I grew up in SW Florida and a shirt was unheard of, it was flip flops, ball cap and shorts and days baking in the sun fishing. Sunscreen nope, baby oil to get that deep dark tan whe you went to the beach. IDIOTS!

Had melanoma on my back almost 4 years ago. Removed, clear margins. Protocol was to cut again 1 cm all around and under where it was to the muscle. All clear. Went every 6 months for check ups, now just told once a year. Dodged a bullet. Total cost for both in office surgeries, pathology reports and follow up visits about $500 US.

I get checked out by my dermatologist twice a year and each time they find something, guaranteed!! One freeze at the visit and then one cut at a later date. I bet they make this crap up but with 4 kids, I am not taking chances.

I had a Mohs procedure to cut out a Basal cell from my right cheek, he sent me across the street to a plastic surgeon to sew me back up. It started as a sore spot like a pimple and it it evolved to a little sore. My wife told me I needed to go to the dermatologist but I thought "that's for old farts". It got worse instead of better, when I finally went he told me if I had come sooner I could have used cream instead if getting cut. Neither Dr gave me pre-op instrictions and I was on a Naproxin regimen and bled like a stuck pig. I promised the Dr and my wife I'd never let him cut me again.
