Default Selling on Craigslist.

I'm selling a few items on CL and I keep getting emails that ask me to contact them directly through a Gmail address, not CL. What is the scam for that? Are they trying to capture a live email address for..........................??????????????

That's how you know your ad has gone live.
The serviceman on deployment will be along shortly, along with the guy on the oil rig.
The scammers have infected FB Marketplace, too.

Take the price out of the price box & place it either in the title line or body of the ad. The bots will quit sending you the automated scam emails.

I sell quite a bit on CL, you just have to ignore the scammers, I know some people get all upset about it, but its obvious who they are.

That oil rig scam sucked because I actually worked on them but I wasn't trying to get them to ship anything, I just wanted to set up a time and date to meet. 😂

Just in the past 4 weeks, I've sold items where I posted on both CL and FB. The first item about a month ago, I had 10-12 responses on FB within 2 hours. Only 1 response on CL. Second item on Monday, 15 responses on FB, 1 on CL.

Today, I gave away a lawn mower that will probably need $100 in repair to get working. I only put it on FB. My phone lit up with at least 25-30 messages within an hour.

My point, don't waste your time on CL. FB is the way to go.

Hi i have looked at your ad and will agree to pay you your asking price. I am currently at the North Pole feeding my reindeer and will not be available to pick item up. Please send me your email and I will send you a eBay invoice. My driver will pick up item when the funds have cleared. Thanks.

I sell lots on CL. I currently have about 15 active listings. Don't get any spam or scams. Just lucky?

I haven't had too much bad luck on CL. I'm on a relatively smaller city version than the nearby big city. Don;t know if that's making a difference.

Facebook is the devil but I may end up selling there too

I've sold items on CL and never had any issues, but the response I've had on Facebook in the past month puts CL to shame. Not even close.

Bought four new tires for the kid's Ranger. They are 14", not too common these days. Had ~40% tread left, but old. Firestone FireHawk white letters. Date code 2011. Had set of 4 listed of CL, for $80, for a month. Yesterday, a guy came and bought them. He drove an hour to get here. He knew they were pretty much junk tires. Had an old classic Dodge that we wanted FIRESTONE white letter tires on (14" rims). Apparently, Firestone doesn't make 14" tires anymore (or not with logo). He probably would have paid 100 each for them!

They can bypass the CL email relay so yes they get your email which is live after you take the ad down (CL relay email is removed once the ad is removed) and the reporting of the user as a scammer is more difficult. This allows them to keep their CL scam accounts much longer.

It also takes you out of any price filtered searches which may be a detriment.

By far the single most effective method I've had to almost eliminate all CL scam attempts is to start the ad off with a line saying replies without a phone number will be deleted as scams. Every reply where they don't list the phone number gets deleted and most of the scammers just don't even try.
