Default Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic or Fiat 500

Got into it with a neighbor the other day over his wife's new Fiat, I just can't see it as a viable mode of transportation. Both the Honda and Toyota get far better MPG which is why I assume you buy a tiny car to start with, IMO they both look better, have more room and better resale value. The only thing I think the Fiat has is better 0-60 times, but taking 8 + seconds to hit 60 doesn't make it a burner.

I know he has to back his wife but god, I'd have given her a verbal smack in the head if she ever went shopping without me let alone bought something like that.

They've been viable modes of transportation in Europe for decades...especially Italy

A Fiat is in the class of a mini...not a Corolla or Civic, both of which are yachts by comparison.

They aren't viable people or stuff haulers. They're small, decently fun to drive....pieces of crap.

On top of it when we were talking cars he called the Fiat a small SUV, OMG I almost died. Another neighbor just walked away, I did so shortly afterwards.

Fiat's aren't faring well as far as the frequency of repairs....lots of niggly issues...and the dealer network isn't the greatest..

In the nicest way why does it bother you what he buys?

It's a stupid dumb purchase and guys love giving a ribbing to other guys, this was my turn. He made the comparison, I just rolled with it and said I'd take the Toyota and Honda 100 times over before I went with the Fiat. The Fiat just doesn't make any practical sense which was his go to defense. The member above nailed it when he said "the wife just wants to look cute" . That I agree with at least, outside of that I don't get it in the least.

Our neighbor in Tennessee has one. Total POS; she never drives it, just takes her husband’s Audi SUV. She took me for a ride in it right after she purchased it, and it was not comfortable in any way. I had a Fiat 124 Sports Coupe many, many years ago, and would take it anytime before this new toy car. Fiat will soon be departing the US market again, I believe.

Also has SEVERAL air fresheners hangin' on the rearview mirror - not that there's anything WRONG with that.

In the end, I'd take the Corolla or the Civic.

Is it by chance a Fiat 500X? If so, it is the same vehicle with a very different body on it as the Jeep Renegade - and despite its diminutive size, the Jeep Renegade is a real suv that, like any other Jeep, can actually be taken off road.

A Renegade IS a Fiat 500X.

"The Jeep Renegade was introduced for the 2015 model year. ... The Jeep Renegade is part of a growing segment of subcompact crossovers and SUVs. It shares the same platform with the Fiat 500X and is built alongside it at the same plant in Italy."

BINGO. Right there is the answer to all you guys questions. You would be amazed and what kinda cars I deliver to rental car places. From Land Rovers to Jags.
The whole idea it to allow everyone to rent what they think they want for a weekend or week if your going on a trip, see if you like it. !!!
Vettes, Jabs, pickups, I deliver it all to there places.

Its no different than paying for a survey if your buying a boat. Your just testing it out for yourself.
Lot of you to be married guys could use this advice to. Rent don't buy. Once you buy it you own it or does it own you. . LOL
Later.

Nothing wrong with buying a car for image, many do it. I work with a very petite girl who moved to the US from Italy in her early 20's and she has the Fiat 500 with 5 speed. I think it reminds her of European cars she grew up with.

Nah, the guy is caught up in defending his wife and the purchase he has no idea what he has. My guess is he read somewhere or the salesman told his wife the X is an SUV based and lead them to think they were all on the same base.

I've actually been thinking about getting my wife one of the Fiat 500C Abarth soft tops as a summer car. It has a 160 HP turbo 4 in a car that only weighs 2600 pounds. Resale is terrible on these things so you can pick up a used one cheap.

There's a reason resale is so bad, might want to look into those crash test ratings.
