Default Missing Tiagra 50W set-up and some luck.

HST for wahoo last Thursday off of Cat Cay, working 150-400 @ 18 mph. I was on the helm with everyone else working the lines. Then I heard BAM. Asked WTH just happened and my son said the middle bent butt on the rocket launcher flew up hit the live well and was gone!!!!!!!!!!. Powered back to clear the lines and deal with losing a $1500 set-up. Started reeling in the spread and one of the rookies said "this one feels heavy" to with I said reel slow and steady. couple of minutes later some yellow 80 braid appeared and was wrapped on a snap swivel. grabbed some gloves and hand lined in the remaining 300', and there she was. Got it all back and that turned a bad day into a great day.

Trolling for salmon a few years back and a new guy let go of a Seeker rod with Accurate reel attached. A few hours later when bringing up a downrigger I see white braid wrapped around the cable. Hand line it in and get both the rod setup and the salmon. Lucky day.

I have been working with a friend lately and we have some really cool leashes that would have prevented it...the leash is coiled and only 18", but will stretch out to 17 feet!
They are bright green, have a nice loop at one end crimped and a stainless caribiner at the other end..

They sell for $19.95....but I have some specials going if you email me. I will send the details!

Always have leashes on all the rods except the one one the R/L. It will get one going forward.

I launched a 50W on the center trigger. It caught in another line and got it back. Broke the rod off though.

BSpot, did you figure out what caused the rod to take flight? Really cool that you had enough luck on your side that a tangle lead to it's recovery.

I believe the lines must have crossed on a wider turn and launched when it came tight again. Still feel lucky today!

Oh, did not mention that all Thursday nite and some Friday nite Bimini had no power!!!!!!!!

Glad you got yours back. I remember fishing with my minister and his sons when I was 11 or 12 years old. I was sitting on the back of his bass boat and we were doing about 50mph and hit a wake. The bump dropped a lure in the water and faster than I could get his attention. It stripped all the line off the reel, jerked the rod and reel out from the console and it missed my head about two inches. My minister never saw it. (rod and reel was a custom setup that would probably be $600 or $700 nowadays). To the bottom never to be seen again.
