Default Wilbur's BBQ

Headed to the coast and decided to have BBQ from Wilbur's. Surprised to see them closed down for what looked permanently. Sad to see. Been eating his BBQ for a long time and the lure of the bypass was too easy. It will be missed.

Damn, if that's the case just drive a couple blocks down and McCalls is on your left. Actually like their Bar-B-Q better but Wilbur's was definitely an institution. Sad to hear.

Wilberís pending closure has been rumored for several years. Wilber will be 89 this year with no family interested in taking over the business. It was rumored that Parkerís out of Greenville took a very hard look at the business at the end off last year but the loss of Wilberís grandfathered status on multiple code requirements made it cost prohibitive to purchase the business. Iíve been eating there since it opened with take-out being a staple on Thursday night. It will be missed. A lot of good food and politics were consumed over almost sixty years.

I have to agree with Shag, the lack of consistency of Wilberís bbq the last few yearís shifted my preference to McCalls. Their variety and consistency is hard to beat.

The McCallís in Clayton was garbage but perhaps that is why they are no longer in Clayton....Wilburís was good but the bypass certainly hurt business. I know I wouldnít pull off to stop anymore. Aaronís is my new spot finger lickin good

It has been over a year since eating there. The bypass has been too convenient. I wish him the best.

I remember growing up this was the place we would always stop and eat on the way to see grand parents down east. Back then, it was a Seymor Johnson was SAC base. B-52's and F 4s right over I- 70 at about 500 feet !
A long time ago...…..

Yeah this sux. Apparently taken by DOR for not paying taxes. Ate at McCalls last week for lunch buffet. Pretty bad. Had their bbq and slaw and potatoes at a board meeting yesterday and the bbq was about as greasy as Iíve ever seen. At least Gradyís is still doing it right albeit only a few days of the week.

Other good one that closed recently was Cobbís in Farmville. Hope Bs will hang in there.

Well crap! Allen & Sons and now Wilburs. I am absolutely heart broken, Wilburs was a very special place for me. Not many real bbq joints left. McCalls is a decent option for a country style buffet but they quit making barbecue several years ago when they started using gas. Real barbecue is cooked over live coals. They serve steamed pulled pork with a vinegar sauce and it's pretty nasty (used to be pretty good when they had the pit out back). That dang by-pass is just too easy....I had been meaning to go the old way and get my Wilburs fix. Dang, now I got something in my eye and my allergies must be kicking in. I gotta step outside.

I didn't even know they had a Clayton location. I was talking about the one just down the street from Wilbur's in Goldsboro.

I grew up on Wilberís and hate he closed. However, Ive found other great places beyond McCalls and Kings on my drives across the state. I particularly recommend Thigs near Richlands (get your Eastern Outfitters fix too) and Redneck BBQ Lab in Benson (worth the drive on Tuesdays for burnt ends). Allen and Sons Pittsboro location is still open. If youíre ever looking for lunch near Statesville, Keatonís is a must go- just Google it. Itís their bbq chicken thatís so ridiculously good. Iím usually not a fan but itís amazing there. You got to get lost to find that place.

Anyone know if Lanes Ferry will ever reopen?

Ahhh, Allen and Son's....I grew up in Chapel Hill and that was my baseline...it's still really good...

I too am sad to see Wilbur's go...they lost me even prior to the bypass when they went cash only below $50...Two awkward dinners was enough...

I work with a young lady who grew up in Goldsboro, she swears that the best place is that red place right at the start of the bypass....can't remember the name and havn't stopped in yet...

To me this is really important, eastern NC BBQ is a cultural thing, we need to support our local BBQ!!

Bills did close. His sons did open a place called Marty's that I hear is really good. We always stop at parkers in Wilson on our way to the beach.

Some sad news, played on a traveling softball team sponsored by Wilbur's in the early eighties, played many tournaments in eastern Carolina, after playing we knew we where getting feed. While attending college rented a house close to Allen & Sons joint on hwy 86, damn I'm getting hungry, can taste there ribs now, several years back, contacted them for catering my parents 50 year anniversary party, called them on the phone to place my order wanted to pay with a Credit Card and was told don't worry about it, afterwards, if your happy with my food and services just send me a check. good honest Folks in my book!
