This. We make a regular pilgrimage from New Bern just to eat at Grady's at least once a year. The one time I have been to Adam's I was pleased. We like McCall's for about everything but the pulled pork barbecue. I never did like the chicken at Wilber's but the pork sandwich was good, though I kinda prefer Ken's in La Grange of just passing through.

Allen & Son and Wilburs and others closing is unfortunately a sign of the times. Many out of the region transplants, who did not grow up on Carolina BBQ like I did, are moving in to the area. Old timers who performed the arduous labor of love to stoke the cookers with Hickory etc at the wee hours in the morning are a dying breed. Unfortunately, I predict this will be a fast-growing trend. Better enjoy the good ol' bbq places and appreciate them while you can.

The last 3 or 4 times we stopped at Ken's we could not eat the BBQ. They have changed the texture to the point it was "minced" and dry/hard. Too bad, I had high hopes they would be dependable but not lately.

I grew up on Wilber's. McCall's good too but in my humble opinion the best of the Sacred Grub can be had at Ken's Grill in La.

Didn't Ken's only serve BBQ a couple of days a week, some years ago? IIRC, maybe they still only cook it one or two days a week.

I am a Redneck BBQ Lab fan, but the half pound I got Thursday afternoon was overcooked, and mushy. If I hadn't been down the road before I tasted it, I would have taken it back.

If you are old enough, you could have seen F-4's, and F-16's, flying over the Tastee Shop.

At my age it would definitely have been the F4s then.

That's a long ways from Goldsboro.... but have to agree that those two, combined with Skylight and Bum's over in Ayden, make the Greenville area BBQ heaven.

Interesting, been awhile since I've eaten there. Will have to validate.
