Default Getting started with King Macks?

I wanna start dabbling with nearshore king Mack fishing likely in conjunction with trolling for Spanish.
I know Iím gonna need some heavier gear than my usual 4000 spinning setups but I wanna go as light as possible and still get the job done.
Thinking of just adding a rod or two to get started with dead bait or diving plugs.

Would prefer the versatility of lighter spinning tackle but willing to go conventional if thatís whatís needed.

Iíd really like to be able to use the same rig for Bull Reds, Cobia etc.

Would something like a Penn Spinfisher 5500 or 6500 liveliner work and if so what rod?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Speedmasters with 20# line worked well for us starting out with king macks. You can catch cobia on them also you just have to work them a little more since you are going be using lower drag. They are usually pretty affordable also.

I started off with the TLD 15 and a 15-30 class rod. I like the 20lb line. Best outfit for the $$$$$

Thanks guys, I bought a couple setups today: A used Speedmaster iv with a Star Handcrafted 15-30 boat/trolling rod that I plan to use to troll dead baits and plugs with 20lb mono and a Penn Spinfisher 5500 combo to use to toss live baits. I hope itíll be versatile enough to get the job done on schooling Kings but can also be used on old drum, etc. itís spooled with 300 yards of 40lb braid.
Feel free to let me know if Iíve made any mistakes so far. Im sure Iíll have more questions moving forward as I start spending more time a few miles off the beach.

I will agree, this was my setup for many years. I liked the 20# line as well with a (30-40#) 6ft fluorocarbon leader (really not needed). The reason for my fluorocarbon leader was for stealth and length 6ft because king fish will tend to eat and go the opposite direction and the tail will end up chafing the 20# main line. I lost many fish until I read about this idea.........Hope this helps....many different ways. catch em up.

Not sure how you got Speedmasters in this day in age....but if you can get them go for it.

Personally I'd start with a Penn SQL 40 combo from West Marine or a local shop (here in NC Neuse Sport shop sells Penn and Shimano combos) , replace the rod with a Connelly rod if and when it breaks down the road. #20 main and #25 flouro leader....then get some 4oz Mackahoo lures from Big Nic fishing, some dead cigar minnows, and troll about 3mph....

Make sure you put plenty of top shot on top of the braid.. kings run super fast so they need some stretch in the line to keep from jerking the hook out. braid doesnt have the stretch that mono does

Id planned on running a topshot on the spinner but would like to hear suggestions of how much and what weight?

Would a 6í 20lb mono topshot be sufficient with a light drag be sufficient?

I would run a lot more than 6' foot of topshot of mono with braid, as a matter of fact I wouldn't even run braid but that's up to you. I personally would spool the braid up on something I could use it later for and respool with 16lb. Momoi Hicatch mono then run 6-8' of flouro 20lb leader to your rig and you are good to go!

20lb Mono for trolling on tld15's with a live bait rod. Slow troll Pogy's on stinger rigs at nearshore wrecks. Big nic macahoos also work well. Neuse sport shop has a tld15 combo spooled with 20lb mono for only 150$ its a screaming deal.

I'm about to sell a set of shimano torium 30's with ricks aluminum knob handles ...used but still work great if you need any additional reels. I've ordered new reels as soon as they are spooled the old ones are available.

Went 2 for 2 at shark hole yesterday. Just fished it for a few hours so nothing special spread wise. Pulled 2 live baits on 6500 baitrunners with braid and a mono top. Not the usual king setups but we wanted light tackle and brought just a few rods. I saw the knot on 1 fish so if you use spinners pack as much line as you can. I personally have x2 soeedmasters, x2 tld-15, x2 Avet JX. All 20lb high viz or green mono and Fluoro top. Tournament boat has all Avetís on Conley rods.

I am old school and am still stuck on the speed masters, they are old and have been rebuilt several times but man itís hard to beat the clickers when a king starts running especially when itís blowing hard and hearing is imparative. Nothing wrong with Avets they are great reels but pricey, I personally would shy from TLDís due to line capacity, they are affordable and are great working reels but donít have a high retrieve ratio (which is needed for kings). Also as mentioned above high visibility line with flourocarbon
